Is Australia closer to British or American culture?
>>

Almost 50-50 of both
Very easy to find an Australian that hates everything about America and it's influence.

Chinese culture is closer to American culture than Australia culture is closer to Chinese culture. They're both ruthless capitalist rat races with limited regard for the individual. Australian society is very, very different from mainland China.

>They're both ruthless capitalist rat races with limited regard for the individual.
American culture prizes the individual and small family units above all else, that's arguably our biggest problem as well as one of our greatest strengths.
>>
>>79114663
So many Aussies here larp and call themselves brits even though they don't even know any living relatives in the UK.
>>
>>79114713
I think different places with in a country have different socio-economics and different cultures.

This is really true but they will never admit it because they think they are the "true aussies".

I went there, spent the first night in air bnb close to the CBD.
Woke up in the morning and I noticed most people weren't hipsters and there was a guy in board shorts, singlet and thongs walking his staffy.

It's not like people here think it is.

lmao what kind of retarded logic is that? you are saying since not all of these 8 million go to that church, that somehow makes it less of a megachurch? that's still a lot of people for just one church.

We don't like New Zealanders because their entire country is built around a one-sided rivalry with Australia. All they ever do is complain about Australia and Australians

"Hate" isn't the right word. We tend to dislike the English in a playful kind of way, but if shit happened to them Australia would be right there to defend them.
You've got to remember that there is a lot of Irish in Australia and lots of people have ancestors that were shipped over here as convicts to work as effective slaves.

As I've often said.

>US - Canada - Australia - NZ - UK.

That's the anglo sphere weighted culturally between it's major influences. What kind of makes Australia a bit weird though is that it's such a fucking culturally bland wasteland of a country that it's hard to pick what has more influence because Australia actually has very little in overt organic culture in itself that isn't imported.
Australian urban design and living is completely American, though Australian language and mannerisms are far more chavvy working class UK.

I honestly can't say Australia is super like the UK though as someone as well who has lived in the UK, again, the way society functions in Australia is far more influenced by post war US urban design. Low density, car centric, individualistic, detached housing, home is castle etc.

UK like most European countries is far more collective and community oriented. In the UK even in rural areas you see entire communities at the pubs you see people walking everywhere etc, in Australia, people don't walk, there isn't really a pub culture etc.

Inner suburb/innercity Melbourne is easily by far the best place to live in Australia if you're a young person.

It's legitimately the only place in Australia that actually tries to have a culture and develop a healthy urban community. Not to mention it has by far the best architecture in Australia since some of the victorian era buildings actually survived and weren't all demolished in the mid 20th century like everywhere else in Australia.
>>
Australia was far more culturally oriented to the UK until post WW2 then slowly oriented itself more to the United States which was kicked into overdrive during the Howard Era since John Howard wished he was American and did everything he could to try make Australia the 51st state of the US.
There is cultural lineage with the UK, but Australia today is totally and completely dominated by the US on every level. As someone born in the early 80s, I actually remember the 90s and 00s quite well and Australia went through insane cultural realignment. Australia today is very different from Australia 1990. Watch interviews with Andrew Peacock today, the difference between the Liberals even in 1990 compared to post-Howard LNP is staggering. the LNP today is 100% the little brother of the Republican party, where in 1990 the LNP was basically where Labor left are today.

Aus/pol/ will claim this because QLD is a wildly hard-right wing state and until the 1990s was pretty much a dictatorial fascist police state.
Beyond the Eco Tourism though, QLD is a absolute fucking shithole with awful people. It's easily by far the worst east coast state.
There is a reason Brisbane is called "Brisvegas". Nothing also in Australia comes close to Surfers Paradise in absolute levels of tryhard.

Where on earth are you from? Rural Tasmania definitely has a pub culture usually tied to the local footy club or cricket club.
>>
>>79123312
Pub culture in Australia is nothing like UK pub culture.

Yes people go to the local footy club, but UK pub culture is on a whole other level.

Australian "pub" culture has more in common with US local bar culture. In the UK you don't go to the pub to "watch the game" like you do here.

Australia massively culturally realigned to the US under Howard, In Howards own words "The US is the greatest country that has ever been in the world".
Australia was far more aligned to UK, before Howard and Australian political tradition was far closer to the UK. Howard changed all that, the Liberal party was changed from a liberal party into a reactionary hard-right conservative party (seriously go watch interviews with Peacock or Fraser, the Liberals were completely different before Howard).
Along with US Republican reactionary Conservatism in Parliament, he imported it enmass on a society level as well. You had the Howard history wars, you had the importation of US style flag waving nationalism, troop worship etc Reagan style Neoliberalism was also imported.

Before Howard, Australia day wasn't even really a thing. Like it was a holiday, but nobody took it seriously and flag waving was looked down upon, now Australia has 2 Australia days, Australia day is now modelled after July 4th in the US, and ANZAC day was turned from a anti-war "Fuck the aristocrats who screwed us over" day into "WOOO WAR SUPPORT DA TROOPS" day with people flag waving and wearing capes at Anzac parade cheering troop marches.

Relaxed media laws as well saw massive drop in Australian produced content and the widespread importation of US cultural products to dominate TV. The Australian film and television production industries basically died under Howard due to being swamped by US content.

Australia is filled with a long history of retarded cultural decisions (Australia used to have what was regarded as the worlds best victorian era architecture, which all got demolished so Australia can "Forge it's own path", the Royal Exhibition Building being one of the last surviving buildings that was only saved from being demolished by edict by the Queen) but Howard was just a wrecking ball.

Also just to add, here's some real fucking Australian violence

>anti-heritage attitudes which led to the demolition of many world class pre-war buildings in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney, destroying some of the world's best examples of Victorian architecture.[16] Modernism was promoted to many Australians as casting off imperial Europe to rebuild a new independent identity, and the existing pre-war architecture, which was a feature of Australian cities, was denigrated.[17] This resulted in many calls to demolish the Royal Exhibition Building, labelled the derogatory term "white elephant". It was not until Queen >Elizabeth II granted the building Royal status that Australians began to recognise its value. The building became the first in Australia to be given World Heritage status.

>The US is the greatest country that has ever been in the world
Gonna need a source on that.

As for a 'reactionary hard-right conservative' liberal party, I don't really see that being a trend specific to Australia. You're correct that Australia went to wars on the behest of the US (although the UK and much of the western world was there as well). Flag waving and the importance of ANZAC day doesn't surprise me and in my opinion is not a US-specific phenomenon. Even before there was much US influence in Australia we saw this effect with WWI and II. Generally people are not supportive of war before we wage it, and then they do in fear of being seen as unpatriotic. Surely there are exceptions of people who a staunchly anti-war, but again, they are the exception. It's no surprise then that people are supportive of troops that have been involved in reasonably popular (or at least viewed with ambivalence) wars. Also after many years the stigma of being a Vietnam war veteran has worn off, and I don't think that has anything specifically to do with Howard.

Most of the west became more economically liberal at the same time as Australia, but this actually started with the previous Labor government. The trend of economic liberalism actually started in the UK with Thatcher before the US came along, so you could say that Australia was gravitating back towards the UK in that manner.

Also I thought that most broadcasting laws that required Australian content were done away with in the 70s and 80s.

Lastly, demolition of Victorian buildings has more to do with moving away from our British heritage than moving in an American direction.

we have distasteful motoring and sports (V8 supercars like NASCAR and Rugby like grid-iron) so i guess we have that in common with USA.

Honestly Young American tourists are obnoxious as fuck and the US accent is the most irritating thing to hear in real life.

The way you pronounce your a's and 'rs.

For like the rest of europe, australia, uk we would pronounce "later" like "lay-dta" but you Americans pronounce it "LAE-TU-UURRR"

Butter, for Europeans, Australians, UK, it's "Buddah" or "buh-ah" but for US, it's "But-TUUUR"

American accents are so fucking unnatural and weird sounding in real life. It doesn't help Americans speak about 50dB louder than everyone else and in a way higher octave.

Seriously when everyone hears US accents in a public place here, they cringe.
