It makes sense.
I mean Italy (and especially Greece) have had connections with the Middle East for thousands of years.

Greece in particular was always more connected with the Middle East than with Europe.
Everything from the food, to the languages they spoke, to the people they conquered/were conquered by.

It wasn't until the Renaissance when a few Western Europeans were interested in Greek works that they were considered "Western"
