I'd drive a 70-80 'merrican landbarge if:

1. They didn't cost >10000€ regardless of condition
2. Gas didn't cost almost 2€/l
3. """temporary""" (in effect since 50') Vehicle tax wasn't based on emissions
4. Spare parts were widely available and cheap

All in all say what you will, if americans got something right it was cars. Not in any sensical way, but you just can't compare an Opel to a Trans Am.
