He is backed by Russia and China and he's encouraged by them to stir up shit to make America look weak.

If America makes a move, it will cteate new openings for China and Russia in various areas of the world while America is busy, if they don't, they will looked cucked and Kim will have even more power and time to create better weapons.

Besides that, from what I understand, Obama periodically paid NK a hefty amount of extortion money, which Trump is seeking to cut.

Here's the deal. North Korea is starting to slowly crack and crumble from within. The people are more aware of the outside world than they once were, and the regime is becoming less and less popular, with nothing but brute force and terror to hold it up. Kimmy knows this and is frantically trying to divert attention from the domestic situation to foreign affairs, in this case trying to rally the country into a holy war against the US, Japan, and South Korea.
>>
>>79090106
Not literally, but it's a quiet approval. Russia has a lot to gain from this situation. Of course if Trump were to solve the China problem altogether, Russia wouldn't be an issue here. But everyone knows they are on the chink side and it's scary.

Kim Jong Il was reportedly much less popular than his father as well, actually the regime had debates over whether or not to display his body next to Kim Il Sung. Even while he was still alive, it had been reported that during the mid-2000s, a number of portraits of him were removed from public places, while portraits of Kim Il Sung were left untouched. They seem to have had some conscious awareness of this and also how he was the butt of jokes in Western media.
>>

One can see a microcosm of this in China, the 2008 recession kneecapped their economy pretty hard so Xi Jinping has been stirring up shit in the South China Sea to draw away attention from domestic concerns, also the CCP has an increasingly hard time justifying its existence especially to young people.
>>
Basically, he knows that without credible deterrence (aka, nuclear tipped ICBM), other countries can and will invade NK, like what happened in Crimea, Iraq, Afghanistan etc.

At this point there's basically two solutions, invade to prevent him from really finishing his ICBM or deal with it, because it doesn't look like he will give up his nuclear/rocket program.

he needs to appear irrational and insane so other countries wont attempt regime change

We had nukes in South Korea in the 70s-80s, but we took them out in the early 90s once the USSR fell. If this shit keeps up, then Trump can with very good justification threaten to station nukes in South Korea and Japan. So China had better cooperate unless they want that.
>>
>>79091666
China doesnt care if you have nukes in Japan or South Korea. Why would they? America has ICBM's and china has no missile defense to stop them. Whether the nukes be in South Korea or Japan or Wisconsin it don't fucking matter. All of china and the world is always within range of an American nukes.

This is retarded dude. China gives no fucks about being in range of nukes. It knows it's already with range and it already has second strike capabilities as a deterrence for nuclear war.

idk if Trump is willing to do that tho since he implied his distrust with SK on Twitter. It's a real shame SK's president is not 100% siding with the US. No stationing nukes when they have trust issues. Japan already has some American nukes stationed if I'm not mistaken.

Well they are still technically at war with the US. They want to use nuke and the nuclear power status as their advantage to sign a peace treaty with the US. With the peace treaty in place, American troops stationed in Korea have no reason to stay. With American troops gone and peace treaty up, no one is gonna intervene when NK invades SK

Nuclear warfare isn't culture dependant, fact is India purposefully rejected the non proliferation treaty when it could have easily sought a nuclear free zone if it didn't want to be dependant on being on Western powers for a nuclear umbrella and fact is it was a much higher priority to you than installing toilets in your country.

they are actually giving a good excuse for pre emptive invasion, they dont have nukes to reach usa yet (and even if they had burgers can strike them down) so this moment would actually be the best for an attack since diplomatic seems to be failing
>>
>>79092646
Not possible at this stage since china has publicly stated it will defend NK as long as it does not attack first. Obviously it could be a bluff but it is convincing enough so far that any US invasion could quickly escalate into a costly war between china and them.

The thought of intervention from China is the real wildcard. Another Korean War with modern weapons would be catastrophic in human life and trade.

it will be a war contained in the Korean penninsula like the first one. The problem for America is this time around china has an air force and navy. If the North Korean War effort is being reinforced from mainland china via airbases and naval bases this drastically changes the dynamics of the war. If the US strikes the Chinese mainland to stop reinforcements of supplies and air power the situation will escalate rapidly.
>>
>>79093174
In case their nuclear dick grows bigger.
>>
>>79093221
>The problem for America is this time around china has an air force and navy
Their air force and navy have equipment that would be state-of-the-art in 1983. I wouldn't worry much about them.
> If the US strikes the Chinese mainland to stop reinforcements of supplies and air power the situation will escalate rapidly
We didn't bomb Chinese territory in 1951, and we certainly wouldn't now.
>>
>>79093221

>>
>>79093360
AFAIK the main reason we didn't bomb China proper during the Korean War was fear of Soviet intervention, although there are many reasons why this would not have happened, most people in Washington just assumed the entire communist world was a monolith controlled from Moscow.

>>79092547
Or maybe he just want to stay untouched and unite people under the regime. As I said earlier on this thread, Kim is losing support domestically and needs to prove himself. Nukes and peace treaty are kind of an required step to becoming an rightful ruler
>>
Xi Jinping reportedly discussed possible DPRK collapse scenarios in 2015 with Park Geun-hye and under what conditions China would and would not intervene. From what I understand, the main thing Beijing wants to avoid at all costs is a US troop presence north of the DMZ. If it was only South Korean troops, they won't care so much, it's specifically American troops that worry them.
>>
>>79093360
>>79093404

And without being able to bomb mainland china, a war with NK backed by china would be impossible to win. They would simply drag out the war for as long as possible until American political resolve for the war effort falters as it always does over time.
>>
>>79093890
Man, this isn't the 50s. We could obliterate North Korea from existence in a couple of button presses.
>>
>>79093519
There's probably easier ways to raise your popularity, but it can be both
>>
>>79093890
even so, nk would be destroyed by such a clash and basically get annexed by china when burgers go away to keep it up so the madman would be removed from the game
we arent in cold war anymore so i doubt they would both invest their national budget into a pointless war, they will simply do some mess while keeping their people united

The power of North Korea is old Manchurian group.
A volunteer army = mounted bandits = nomadic cavalry in Manchuria was made by the support of Japanese political activists.
Their power parted from Japan, and after that, they supported communists of China and instituted North Korea.
They are followers for red China today, but they are not the same force.
Such a existence is called as 'Tozama' in Japanese.
>>
If the North develops a dangerous enough nuclear deterrent which could fuck up major US cities and other major cities in the region then they can effectively invade the south or place an ultimatum on the US and the south to hand over control of the peninsular to them. It will be an incredibly difficult situation for the US and everyone else because they'll be nuked to shit if they intervene. The war is either going to restart very soon with the US bombing the shit out of NK before they develop said nuclear deterrent or the US will end up doing shit all and eventually the North would be able to regain control over the South

Survival of Juche
None of Americas traditional options for deterence work.
Can't force containment on an already contained country. Sanctions are ineffective given their closed economy and under-the-table trades. No political violence, puppet implementation, black propaganda works because the Koreans are brainwashed and isolated. Can't attack pre-emptively because of international backlash and the risk of losing ASEAN influence to China.

Diplomatic talks worked under Clinton until Bush fucked up. Obama's foreign policy advisors fucked up harder when they essentially set a precedent of back-stabbing after nuclear capability disarment/military standown of Libya.

im quite disappointed at the fact that obviously this shit will last soooo long. apparently, russia and china still have a strong will to back them. russia has allowed them to run their new travel agency approved by both govt, which has been open since just a few months ago, and started exporting more oils to the peninsula than last year.
as for him, any western media hasnt released these articles on western internet, though as a matter of fact its pretty valid and reliable, but he probably only thinks of america and doesnt give a shit about any other countries. this is actually HIS conversation with fujimoto, who served his father as a cook, in japanese.
http://gendai.ismedia.jp/articles/-/48646

following this shit, according to the leading article criticizing japans new missiles of their news paper on sep 2 or so, im sure his mind and view of it have yet to be changed. you can confirm the same narrative there "our target is only america, they are the fuckers, we wont attack japan so dont bother making things happen and noise." the editors arent a monolith, they say different things each time, like "we can eradicate japan whenever we want", but its very noteworthy that still this "tone" oddly stands out, cause its the very same as that of him.
>>
imo hes literally obsessed only bout america. i dunno about the actual reason but probably contrary to the serious concerns out there, its just some stupid spree and self-hype like skers getting stoned and cummed protesting against japan. they mustve held a party after the test. they are eventually the same people, have the same traditional mindset. even though its fucking wacky insular and self-centered, they drum up for themselves such a way to get to an orgasm. also they cant stop it until either they get bored of it or are on the verge of an actual crisis.

and this is also what any western "well informed" anon still hasnt covered or mentioned or recognized. this is more about "cultural" and "ethnic" matters/issues/norms, its their historical stuff, not some batshit insane actions or some brave bad-ass story like "he isnt afraid of drumpf". not gonna lie, this is actually "nk-pop". they think they are relevant af and wanna stick out.

I know this play very well, because we lived it here with a certain banana company (and other entities).

That "progress" or "betterment" is not there to benefit the population but to serve the "benefactor" in furthering its goal.

You cannot claim you made "better" a place for building some buildings when you imposed yourself by force onto another population turning them into a vassal territory in which the locals become second class citizens; when you shamelessly kill their symbol of power (just imagine the chimpout that would have ensued if Americans had executed the Japanese emperor after the war, since that man is literally their identity) with absolute impunity demonstrating that they are not in control now; and when you try to forcefully supress their identity and replace it with a foreign one that reinforces their role as vassals and inferior to you.

Also, yeah, in the same sense, as if Japanese (particularly their crazed ultra nationalist elite) were thankful to America and the Western world for openning them to the world, civilizing their ancestors and teaching them "freedom", equality, humility, repentance and democracy, when they are actively conspiring to backpedal on those changes and go back in time to when their arrogance and medieval ways (that weeaboos love do much, and cum to their mention) reigned supreme.

From everything I have read, I just want to say that I'm optimistic that China and Russia will contain North Korea's bullshit if Kim Jong-Un continues to crank up the heat. I'm aware that those two nations have to be much more careful about what they say and do in response because they both share a border with the country and if NK picks up any hint that it doesn't have their support could make Kim panic and start threatening THEIR mainland with missiles. People are frustrated at Russia and China, but I understand that they're probably just as worried and upset over this as most other nations are.

Also, I'm 90% positive North Korea will test another ICBM near or on September 9th (its founding day), and once again, the success of the launch will surpass everyone's expectations. This new ICBM launch will probably go far enough to confirm that it really COULD hit anywhere in the US, finally including states on the lower-east side like Florida. If the test is on the 9th this month, it would be three days before the UN Security Council meeting is held where they'll be discussing whether or not to impose more sanctions on North Korea. The US will probably want to cut off oil exports to the regime, but that sounds stupid because any embargo could immediately ignite a war. I really, really, really do not want a fucking war. But at this point I'm not sure what else could be done. North Korea is NOT givin up those nukes. And to halt our drills or other refractory measures could come across like we're rewarding them for spooking Japan. I wonder if Trump's called Putin at all as for what to do about this. Forget the possible election meddling, forget the sanctions and diplomat expulsions, fuck ALL that at this time, we need unity on this issue NOW. I know Russia keeps suggesting we halt the drills or whatever, but I don't think they'd lower their guard in the face of a hostile threat and if they were in this situation. And North Korea has negotiated in bad faith before.

And while we're on the subject of denuclearization in general, after this bullshit's over with, WHENEVER that is, a month, a year, ten years, I'd like for the US to send a strong, unambiguous signal to the world in taking the first step in resuming the gradual reduction of strategic nuclear warheads (that means the ones that are locked, loaded, and ready to go), and all warheads in general. We are not on a rapid course for war with Russia anytime soon, and the reduction of warheads will greatly decrease the threat that both sides feel. Our congressmen will complain, and some of military brass, too, but enough is enough. This nuclear-end-of-the-world shit is exhausting. It's a miracle half the continents we can live on don't have nukes or nuclear programs at all. And since we and Russia together have 90% of the world's nukes total, we have to start reducing ours first. It's only fair. Hopefully, as we get down to near the same number that France, China, and the UK have, they can be convinced to start taking theirs apart, too. Then India, Pakistan, and whoever's left.

THAT INCLUDES ANNOUNCING THE HALT OF OUR MISSILE DEFENSE TESTS. If I was Russian or Chinese and thought the US could strike first with ample protection from retaliatory strikes, I'd be pissed and worried, too. Our missile defense as they currently are, along with their capabilities, are grossly exaggerated. They were designed specifically to succeed and we still only got a 54% record on shooting them down. All it would take is four or five or more missiles to approach a system at once. The system goes after the dummy missiles while the real one potentially gets through and turns Los Angeles into an even bigger parking lot than it already is.

Also against my better judgement, general curiosity led me to look up official NK state media. upon finding actual domains I got instant blocked attacks, kek.

I'm really hoping that Kim Jong-Un does or says something stupid enough for China to put its foot down. The fact that he ordered that nuke test just HOURS before Jinping's economic summit and some five-years-in-the-making conference he's supposed to have feels like North Korea saying "in your face, let's see how much longer you'll try meddling in our affairs now". And in August in their media, they said "China's friendship is not worth our nuclear program... they're dancing to the tune of the United States... they should not test the limits of the DPRK's patience", to paraphrase. It's even rumored that China's doing its own military drills that appear to be border protection exercises as well as maneuvers meant to invade North Korea themselves, but whether that's true, nobody knows at this time.

He seems to be echoing the sentiments of one of the most prolific defectors from the DPRK in decades, who cites the prominence of private markets (which are doing a better job of feeding people than the welfare state) and the considerably more widespread exposure to the outside world.

On one hand, Thae probably knows more about North Korea than any of us in this thread, on the other hand, I've always wondered how any government could survive something like the North Korean famine of the 1990s without totally collapsing; if they survived that, then I'm not sure what could destroy them other than killing Kim Jong-un and anyone who ascribes to his cult.
There's also the chance that Thae is just a sleazy opportunist who's saying whatever needs to be said to live a decent life in South Korea, or that he's a really, really good double agent who's still working for Pyongyang and somehow managed to trick the ROK's NIS, who I assume are very good at vetting defectors.
I want to believe what Thae is saying is true, but people have been predicting the collapse of North Korea and the Kim Dynasty for a long time and it has not happened.

Wasnt there talk that people hoped Kim Jung Un would be more moderate and lax because he was younger? He was probably better off going for that approach since it seems like he'll dig himself into a hole, especially since its unclear if North Korea's regime would allow females to be continuing the Kim dynasty.

>Wasnt there talk that people hoped Kim Jung Un would be more moderate and lax because he was younger?

Yes, also because he was educated abroad and may have been less insane due to social interaction with people outside the North Korean dynastic bubble

Oh fucking boy were they all wrong. He's way worse than his father

Kim Jong-Il who knew how to use things like nuclear weapons and missiles to get what he wanted, and he was "moderate" about it. Food runs short, he makes some bombs, people say stop and he says ok if they send aid. Few years go by, aid runs out, repeat. It was far more of a slow political tool for him.

Kimmy boy here really does want those nukes above all, and their use as leverage is gone.
>>
>>79117393
But why build the nukes full on? Its basically ensuring that if a country likr America does get involved, it will be the end of the Kim dynasty should a war break out.
>>
>>79117649

North Korea is convinced that the diplomatic consequences would be far greater for the US than it would be for them should a war break out. While we have plenty of resources to attack the sites where they could launch their missiles from, I think Donald Trump would make some speech that boils down to tit-for-tat responses to North Korea launching a nuke against the United States. Kim Jong-Un is betting EVERYTHING on that.
>>
>>79117649
>But why build the nukes full on?

Self preservation. Just look at history.

>Saddam Hussein
>US claims he has nukes (regardless of truth, just the surface idea)
>US invades, he's dead

>Ghaddafi
>Abandons his nuclear ambitions in return for aid during negotiations with the US
>Eventually US backs his overthrowing and death

There is history showing that trying to make nukes leads to an eventual US attack and death of that state. The North is already beyond starting to make nukes even before Kim Jong-Un came to power, so now he sees that eventual US invasion and overthrow is a future so the only option is to do what Saddam and Ghaddafi didn't, ACTUALLY GET NUKES. Once that happens, there is MAD (Well, the North even with an ICBM mounted H-Bomb can't destroy the US entirely, but it can heavily damage it and easily fully destroy regional allies like Japan and South Korea) and with this, the US now can never risk full scale attack and they lose leverage.

With this, Korea finally realises it's 60+ year goal, it is now an undeniable player on the world scale and it can no longer be ignored. It now has power, and sits at the table.

This is the most false post to have been posted on /int/ over the past two years. Moral equivalency is both idiotic and dangerous in these sorts of cases, and you should be personally ashamed of yourself for really believing such stupidity.

The blame is squarely and entirely on North Korea. Get right with reality and recant your previously false opinion, or else remain wrong. We still welcome your assistance in any event.

So I, let go watching you turn your back like you always do
You face away and pretend I'm not

Look how close Seoul is to Beijing. Now look how close Dandong (I know it's a Chinese city, but it's right on the Southern most portion of China's boarder with NK) is to Beijing. Having US troops in South Korea already makes the CCP really tense, not only would US troops be even closer to China, but they would also now be able to march straight into China if they were in NK.

It's a similar deal to why Russia is freaking out about how close NATO bases are to Moscow now as opposed to how far they were just a few decades ago.
