Hey /int/
What did your (great) grand-parents do in WWII?
My great grandfather was a yardmaster.
In 1945 the Allies bombed his train station and he saw a lot of shit going down.
They interrogated him as soon as the Americans occupied the city.
A year later he shared his own wine with a couple of soldiers and they became friends (not officially of course).
>>
Everybody is asleep, man. Let's have this thread tomorrow. And yeah, my great grandfather killed your countrymen, was captured but then freed.
>>
My great granddad was a communications specialist, a Master Seargent if you know what that means. It's the most elite of the non-officer soldiers.

He originally fought on the American Front, but not sure where, only know about this because he has the medal. But then he was sent to France about a week or so after D-Day, he saw combat but not sure if it was a major battle or a skirmish.
>>
Granddad - RAF radio mechanic for beaufighters
Great-Granddad - Engineering officer on an number of ships, on Cumberland in the battle of The river plate, then sunk off Norway in the early years of the war but survived and served on other ships.

Step-Granddad - died when HMS Dasher blew up .

One was too young, but the other on my mom's side :
>be alsatian
>be german now
>join the Kriegsmarine
>stuff happens
>can't be on boats at some point because is needed on land
>stuff happens
>be captured by russians
I barely read his memoirs so I don't know much about the details
>>
>>79071128

Only great grandparents fought.
One was: the Navy and guided stuff across the Atlantic and delivered stuff to Russia via the arctic north.

The other was in the army fight in Africa and ends up being shrapnel I his leg and had his leg removed.

Wish I know them better
>>
>>79071128
they lived surrounded by communists, were dirt poor and fought for axis to the bitter end (literally entire family)
at the end were exiled, sent to bleiburg, barely survived, the state still fucks us even sometimes in these psot communsit times

He almost died of starvation near Leningrad once, apparently.

I am half-alsatian. The other half is charentais, and I feel french. I've been living 3 years in Alsace and I have family there, so I can tell you, alsatian mostly feel more alsatian than french. They are special. But they still feel they belong to France and are french, they just feel closer to their region.

my grands was a travelling jobber.

>>
My grandad was a machine gunner in Austria. During a fight he was wounded with a piece of shrapnel, got decommissioned afterwards.
He really didn't like to speak about the war. Only once he told a story how he went to a forest to gather some wood for a campfire to make a dinner and met a german with a rifle. He himself had a fully automatic PPSH. The exchanged fire for a little bit. My grandad counted that the german fired five shots (probably all he got). He then yelled something in german and ran away. My grandad didn't chase him and returned to the camp.

Oh and his then-future wife, my grandmother, nearly got killed by the germans when she was picking mushrooms near the occupied airfield and accidentally cut german phone line. They spared her because she was just 8 years old.

He doesn't talk about what he did but after the war he was a huge pacifist, thought it was the stupidest thing he's ever done

My grandmother's brother was a kid during the war. When the germans came they chose their home as their residence. One night he woke up to take a piss but was too scared to go out at night so he chose the farthest corner to do his dirty deeds.
By the unfortunate coincidence a german soldier was sleeping in that corner. The german turned out to be a nice guy. He just laughed about it and presented the kid, who got scared for his life, a sprats sandwich to calm him down.

That's pretty cool. I wish I had my grandpa's uniform but I think one of my uncles have it or maybe he just dumped it since it must have recalled him bad memories

I'm oldfag. My father was working as a civilian heavy equipment operator in the naval yard at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese bombed it. Saw the bombing and helped in the salvage operation afterwards. Got homesick, quit, and went back to the states. Naval Yard manager was pissed that he quit and reported him to the draft board. Was drafted into the army a couple weeks later. 746th Tank Battalion. Sargent in charge of a mortar squad and a half-track. Landed on Utah beach on D-day. Fought across Europe as part of the Ninth Infantry. Fought for the bridge at Remagen, fought in the Hurtgen Forest. Bronze Star. Made it home alive and in more or less one piece. Had a family and a successful career. Died last May at 94. I loved him and cried when he died. I have his medals and VA flag and the Polish 9mm Radom pistol he carried instead of the issue .45.

An old veteran neighbor of mine who was a good friend of the family always told me how horrible war is.
He once told me that he is really proud of me for being so pacifistic, saying that the world needs more people like me.
I know that bragging with this is really not cool and pretty bitchy but I always took that to my heart and I'm very proud of it.

Great grandfathers:
>No. 1
Croat seaman. Joined the Yugoslav Partisans. Was eventually captured by the Italians and taken to their concentration camp on Rab until Partisans liberated the camp. Survived.
>No. 2
Croat naval merchant. Had 2-3 ships. One of the ships was taken down by a RAF airplane. Partisans forced him to transport ammo right after the war, but his ship blew up together with him. It was probably an accident, but my grandfather is convinced that some commie rigged it because he traded with Italians during the war.
>No. 3
Bosnian Muslim farmer and carriage driver. Was caught bringing food to his brother who was in the Partisans. Ended up in a concentration camp all the way in Germany, I forgot the name. Some Nazi officer pulled him out of the camp to be his personal servant. Eventually made it back to Bosnia.
