It's less about nationality and more about how you look. Overall in rural areas there's more distrust to outsiders in general (even if you are an American). In urban areas there's so much of an ethnic mix already nobody will usually even look twice at you on the street.

The only people you really might have problems with in France are gypsies.

Or low class people if you go in a low income area of a big city (mostly arabs)
