Literally population density and relatively high development. For example, the reason why there's so little of France in that banana is because there's relatively little between Paris and the north/Strassbourg in terms of densely populated cities, while in England and the Netherlands everyone's stacked on top of eachother like ants.

The Golden Banana is also becoming a meme, encompassing that same highly populated and developed part of Northern Italy, the cities along France's Mediterranean coast and Catalonia (the most economically developed part of Spain).
