I'm guessing OP read the news about the Guru thing and is referring to civil unrest, separatism, and racial/religious tensions not living standards or anything. By most standards India, like most third world countries, has improved noticeably in human development.

I'm referring to how in the 60s-70s it was seen as a great travel destination, great people, good place to be and all, and now there's poo on the streets and rape.
