In every italian village near the woods it's normal, and we usually have a city office dedicated to mushroom evaluation, so if you're not confident an expert will tell you if they're safe or not.

We don't do it because a little known fact is fucking EVERYTHING here will fuck you up somehow. Literally nobody touches bushes or wades through tall plants because they're almost always lightly poisonous and will fuck you up for a week with some rash.

Also you better seriously know what your doing mushroom picking because the vast majority of mushrooms here are extremely poisonous or fatal. Death cap grows like a weed here and is very easily mistaken for your garden variety edible. You have to look at the stem and if it has a skirt you'll die. If it doesn't I guess maybe you'll be alright but fuck that risk.

By the way, north-russian forests are pretty safe place. There are couple of poisonous berries and mushrooms and vipers. If bears won't crush your ribs, you are safe.

I once found like 20lbs of laughing gyms by the side of the highway. A huge colony. I harvested 6.7lbs (weighed it when I got home) and tripped for like a full day listening to music and playing with my dog outside.

I really felt on the same level as an animal. I saved them in jars with myelin and I fed them, I enjoy gardening so this was like the difference between baking and cooking. I threw them away under my work Bench and I've given some to family/friends as a *secret* gift.
