Wtf Canadians, are you really not allowed to defend yourselves?
you're not allowed to use excessive force, you can only use enough force so as to stop the person. you can only use deadly force if your life is threatened, ie if they attack you first or they have a weapon. however if it's just your property being threatened, say for example a drunk wanders into your house thinking its his, there's less lenience, and you can't just shoot them if you just "feel" threatened. this guy is probably omitting some details. shooting an intruder would count as excessive force if we wasn't directly threatening your life. however if the other guy had a gun it wouldn't count as excessive.
