There's a couple android apps to learn afrikaans. Also, you will want to listen to some of their radios to expose yourself to the language and pronunciation.

Of course it will help, Afrikaans is not even a language it is just Cape Dutch (a dialect). It shouldn't even be standardized.

It will absolutely help a lot in reading Afrikaans

Understanding spoken language is a lot more difficult

Reading the language is easier than hearing or speaking it, but they will understand Dutch mostly.
When you hear Afrikaans a lot around you, you will get used to it and you will understand spoken Afrikaans too.
