Why have we given up on Africa but not on the Middle East?

At this point, nobody cares about the Congo and its civil war which has decimated the country. Nobody cares about the widespread poverty in Central and Western Africa.

Even southeast Asian countries are poor and irrelevant.

Yet we all want the Middle East to succeed and that's where a lot of the attention in worldwide media has been going to.

Why?
