Don't forget the Soviets agreed that the Soviet Union would enter the war against Japan once Nazi Germany was defeated and had 1.6 million troops at the ready. These were tough, capable battle hardened soldiers at this point, who went through Manchukuo in 3 weeks and 3 days. The Russian + American/Allied attack on Japan would have been thousands of times more devastating then those two bombs.

They showed no signs of surrender before then.
There would have been countless more casualties on both sides if they had not been dropped.
