Post big and impressive churches from your country itt (mudslimes not welcome).
This wooden church from Kerimäki is capable of holding 5000 people, making it the biggest wooden church in the world.

Most of the so called ""pr*testants"" are atheists anyway. Why don't you just burn all your churches while tipping your fedora?

There are bigger ones in France, but when you are near this one it feels very massive

Looks great. How tall is that thing?
>>78574592
Impressive but kinda scary. The previous version of it looks comfier
>>78573488
this is my country's largest church (the fourth biggest in Europe), built in the middle of the 19th century in Classicist style, on top of the ruins of a previous Gothic cathedral built in the 12th century
you can climb the stairs to a panorama walkway around the dome from where you can see the whole region
>>78574592
>>78574652
Very nice, post more please, I don't know shit about Scandinavian cathedrals as I always assume you guys have less impressive architecture than down here in "regular" Europe, no offense
Here's one made out of volcanic stone, hence the black colour
>>78574852
here's how it looks like from the Slovakian side
>>78574757
It is 78m high, actually not even among the tallest in France
>>78574757
The "previous version" of it was just some makeshift solution to make it function until it was possible to afford restoring it. Before burning down a million times over history, it should have looked as scary as it currently does.
We do have many comfy churches though, but none are huge or impressive like Nidaros.
>>78574852
>>78574917
I'd visit the fuck outta it mate
tfw this cathedral was made only 140 years ago by fanboys.
No h8 pls its the largest one in my city
>>78574896
Not much more to show, imo there's little worthy of being called cathedrals in Scandinavia when compared to southern continental Europe and the British Isles.
>>78575405
It's alright, still miles better than modern looking churched
It must be because I grew up here but I have a really hard time considering a random room with a cross and benches a church, for it has to look ancient enough. I'm not a believer tho
>>78574852
Very nice location, kinda reminds me of Helsinki cathedral
>>78574896
Stands out a bit too much, but still very impressive

this is the largest mosque from the Ottoman period transformed into a Christian church
>>78575782
Looks nice and comfy but a bit cold. I'm more into wooden churches.
>>78576043
Is it from the (late) 19th century era of romanticism? It looks like a mosque.

This is THE Church
>>78576196
it was consecrated in 1859, the Mosque-like apperance is due to the fact that it was built in Moorish Revival style

You only see it from far away but it's quite the big cathedral and has utterly gorgeous stained glass inside
here's another tiny churhch from me cuntray
>>78573488
Big temples are very aesthetically unpleasant and uncomfortable imo. Small hometown temples just feel better in every imaginable way.
even though it looks like something out of a wet dream of Varg Vikernes, this one's a Catholic church, designed by the late master of organic architecture, Imre Makovecz
Most of Sweden's best churches are on Gotland. Their age is what impresses me, more then their opulence and extravagance. And that there're so many of them and that they're so densely packed.

This >>78576779 >>78575982 >>78577500 >>78577723 >>78577784 is really how churches should be imo, more specifically in countries that already had temples dedicated to their native deities prior to Christianity. There's a luggage of history in this type of architecture that no massive, sun-blocking, overly-flamboyant church will ever be able to replace. It carries the actual ethnocultural identity of the people living around it, it places the people together with God, not the monument.
this one really isn't that big but I still like it. It's hard to find good pictures of it because of all the fucking oak trees everywhere.

Do young Swedes even go to church?
>>78578124
>so the altar was transported there?
not sure of the details, only that the church (and the fort surrounding it, which disappeared) date back to 1596, and the altar and pulpit were carved by native americans with the guiding hand of fransiscan missionaires (the ones in that famous movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091530/ are jesuits)
the temple itself was built in 1755, i googled
Hello, the biggest guy is here
You can fit 60k people inside the main church
Length 218m

The dome is almost 42m wide for 14k tons
The diameter of the 4 pillars supporting the dome is 71m
The bell is 2.3m in diameter and weighs 9 tons

Vatican is part of Italy because is not a real country, even technically is not considered big enough to be a true nation, is accepted because the Pope and shit
When Mussolini signed the "Patti Lateranensi" granted the Pope to have his small state but in fact the Vatican is dependent on Italy in almost everything
Vatican citizens and all bishops are obliged to swear allegiance to Italy, not to the Vatican
If you declare war on the Vatican you are declaring war to Italy
Vatican is not technically part of the UE, but do you see any customs?
The Vatican is dependent on Italy for all services, I mean, do you think there is room for a dump or a power plant?
Of course Italy has its share of the gain, religious tourists spend their money in Italy
A symbol case are the Vatican radio antennas, electromagnetic emissions exceeded the limits allowed by Italian law and Italian judges have imposed on the Vatican to remove the antennas, they can not oppose this
And most importantly, Italy can rescind the Patti Lateranensi in any moment and the Vatican would again become part of the Italian state
>>78581360
Interesting, thanks m8
>>78581360
Yes and no, the Vatican, as in the Papal states, is far older than Italy and in terms of succesion it could be argued the true heir to Rome (the Pope remains the Pontifex Maximus to this day) Much of Italian culture is in fact the culture which developed over centuries in these Papal states. After Garibaldi's unification the compromise became a necessary one to avoid a religious civil war. Sure, I'll be the first to agree it's all Italian culture in the end regardless of these differences but there is an important point to be made here, much of what was built by the Popes was accomplished with the donations of Catholics worldwide, in terms of heritage there's an argument to be made it also belongs to all Catholics who found in Rome their global cultural capital, this thread is largely Catholic churches, built largely to the very purpose of expanding this common culture.

you're a big guy
The sexy big guy
Czar's Nicky's tramp stamp that was considered for demolition at one point.
It no-longer appears on lists of the world's tallest buildings in the past, due to uncertainty with the measurements at the time, but it's height is now the limit for buildings in Tallinn, so atleast it won't be trumped on it's turf.
Have quite a bunch of them but not that impressive.

Here's a church in the town where my high school was. On the same picture is a bar and under the bar, with a door on the wharf, a swinger club
Also a kind of typical church here is this, many are very sturdy, stern looking instead of the more intricate you can find up north

Argentine clay... Next.
this is the main church in Budapest
its dome collapsed two times during construction and not even the third chief architect lived to see the end of the project, as it took more than fifty years to build St. Stephen's Basilica, on what was a small earthen mound beforehand
it was on this mound during the great Pest flood of 1838 that hundreds of people escaped drowning by death, as it was the highest point in the whole area, thus serving as a refuge for whole families, whom, as a way of thanking God for his help, decided to donate a part of their wealth for the construction of a huge basilica
another fun fact: the church houses the mummified right hand of our first Christian king, St. Stephen, which is paraded around the city on 20 August every year
