this is my country's largest church (the fourth biggest in Europe), built in the middle of the 19th century in Classicist style, on top of the ruins of a previous Gothic cathedral built in the 12th century

you can climb the stairs to a panorama walkway around the dome from where you can see the whole region

There's a luggage of history in this type of architecture that no massive, sun-blocking, overly-flamboyant church will ever be able to replace. It carries the actual ethnocultural identity of the people living around it, it places the people together with God, not the monument.

That RC church is in Baltimore, which I should point out is in within the Maryland Episcopal Diocese, which I should point out started in 1608 with the first church service in Maryland. A Church of England (now Episcopal) service.

this is the main church in Budapest
its dome collapsed two times during construction and not even the third chief architect lived to see the end of the project, as it took more than fifty years to build St. Stephen's Basilica, on what was a small earthen mound beforehand
it was on this mound during the great Pest flood of 1838 that hundreds of people escaped drowning by death, as it was the highest point in the whole area, thus serving as a refuge for whole families, whom, as a way of thanking God for his help, decided to donate a part of their wealth for the construction of a huge basilica

another fun fact: the church houses the mummified right hand of our first Christian king, St. Stephen, which is paraded around the city on 20 August every year
