That's what we were trying to prevent. We wanted to help the South Vietnamese, as well as prevent communism from growing in our other allies such as Thailand, Philippines, Japan.

A civil war is a matter of national sovereignty. Your ally should be the nation and it's people, not the current regime. Use diplomatic means to avoid violence all you like, but you should see it as of the utmost importance that you don't get involved within a foreign nation's domestic issue.Even if one side asks for assistance, you should be especially vigilant to avoid interfering at all costs.
