The vast majority of touists , I've met here were busines travelers in hotels(mainly hotel bars) as I lived almost exclusivly in hotels for 5 years. The Bong's, Germans, Candians and the Aussie's were the best overall...the language thing made it easier I'm sure. The Bongs must be on their best behavior over here because they were incredibly well mannered and likable. Maybe the difference was that these were Business trips and they were better behaved then some of the drunken nightmare stories Euro's tell us about them.

In Maribor when I could not make me understand with my shitty slovene, I resorted to german and lots of people spoke german.

In Ljubljana everyone I met spoke decent english, the only guy that didn't was a guy guarding the parking at Kino Šiška. The parking card was unable to be read by the automat, and with only "Stroj ne deluje" and "A govorijo angleško pri telefonu?" I get every info I wanted and the guy was super helpful, seeing I was struggling with the language.

In Koper and Piran mostly everybody and their dog speaks Italian as well.

Long story short, I think you can get anything done in Slovenia without Slovenian.
