It's not irrelevant. With haplogroups you can trace the migration patterns of your paternal/maternal ancestors. The deeper you go into a subclade, the more recent the timeline becomes. It's simply interesting and provides a sense of unity with other people, which you would have though of as foreign until now.

You'd have to be very clueless to think otherwise.
Africans have a distinct branch called V88 which has been there for thousands of years and is just distantly related to other R1b.
