Romance country and language, Romanians are a mix of native Balkan people, Roman colonists and Slavs. The language is closer to the dialects South of Tuscany than North, which includes standard Italian. Might be an indication for the origin of the colonists.
Minorities, in descending order, are Hungarians, Gypsies, Germans and Turks.
One of the last countries in Europe to de facto outlaw Gypsy slavery. Hence, the Gypsies there are wilder than in Western Europe, where they are generally mixed with the locals and somehow assimilated into the host culture.
Rapidly shrinking population, due to low birth rates ~1.2 and high emigration, currently at around 18m, supposed to shrink to 15m by 2050 and 10m by 2100. Rapidly growing GDP/capita though, all the borderland counties are richer than the adjacent counties from the neighbouring countries.
The closest people on a genetic level to Romanians are Serbs and Bulgarians.

I've seen several British posters say it's a great place to go on vacation though. Actually I guess they probably said "on holiday" since they were British but whatever.
They used to be very poor and backwards, but they have made a big progress recently and they're a fast-developing country, probably the Balkan powerhouse soon.

They make Dacia cars and many other things for western EU countries.

The country with the largest German diaspora. (By that i mean people who do consider themselves German, not just descendants of Germans like in America). The Germans played a big historical role in especially Transsylvania.

It's great for vacationing in the mountains. The seaside is too crowded and expensive since almost half of Romania's seaside is a natural reservation, so most Romanians themselves prefer Bulgaria and Greece to it.
