I can't make up my mind on what language I want to learn.

On one hand, I'd like to know Spanish because it's useful, but I really dislike the way it looks and sounds, and I don't like any of the cultures surrounding it.

On the other hand, Iran really interests me. The history and culture are fascinating, and the language sounds beautiful to me.
>>
>>78450725
Yeah. Remember that the plural for verbs in the 2nd and 3rd person have the same conjugation, so "Me han dicho" can refer to either ustedes or ellos
>>
>>78452627
Native French and English speaker btw so Spanish would be pretty easy for me, vocabulary-wise. I also live in Louisiana and we got lots of Mexicans here so I'd have lots of people to speak with.
>>
>>78452672
Although most of the times when we refer to the 2nd person in plural we will include the ustedes: Ustedes me han dicho. So the "Me han dicho" would normally imply the third person: Ellos

Thank you. Another thing I saw was adding "a ellos" or "a ustedes" after to clarify. Something like "Me han dicho a ellos" or "Me han dicho a ustedes" Is that correct also?

No, if you want to specify then add it before
Ellos me han dicho/Ustedes me han dicho

If you are interested in history Persian is crazy good. It's been used as the literary language throughout the muslim world and on top of that (apparently) you can understand the written language going back 1000+ years which is insane.

Assuming you're talking about Haitian creole, it really depends. Sometimes it's almost identical to French if you cherrypick the right dialects and sentences, other times it's not even slightly mutually intelligible.

french creole from the antilles and guyane is like autistic, simplified french. A bit hard to understand sometimes

Not that anon, but, I wanted to go to Spain recently and decided against it. They don't seem to want tourists.

It's amazing a country with nearly 20% unemployment, and nearly 50% unemployment in the youth - doesn't want tourism money. I live in a tourist spot so I understand the pain of it though. I understand how expensive it makes things, how crazy housing gets, the traffic, but overall my city depends on it so I put up with it. I guess they've just had enough.

Any big studying plans for the weekend, /lang/?
>>
>>78457671
My plan is 2 Pimsleur German lessons, an hour or so on Duolingo, and to try and watch some tv/movies in German to work on listening and getting a feel for how it sounds.

I also have the German For Dummies book and I want to read the grammar sections. Anyone have recommendations on a good German grammar text to work from?

Self-study is difficult.
>>
>>78457762
2 Pimsleur lessons and 1 hr Duolingo a day, I meant. Not sleeping on a good schedule keeps catching up with me...
>>
>>78457671
Going out of town for a concert this weekend so I'm trying to put together some study material to take with me
>>
>>78457671
I guess I should answer also:
Nothing to do this weekend, housework is pretty much caught up so...
-The rest of Michel Thomas Spanish Foundation (5 hours left, so, 2.5 hours per day of that).
-Pimsleur Saturday, Pimsleur Sunday. Add associated flashcards.
-Daily Duolingo.
-Usual Quizlet Long Term Learning sessions.

>>78457762
>>78457800
So a Pimsleur on Saturday and another on Sunday, plus an hour of Duolingo each day? I get tempted to do a bunch of Duolingo but I feel like I could complete it and learn nothing if I'm not careful to internalize each piece.

I'm sorry I don't know any German resources.

>>78457927
Nice. Driving or flying? Both have lots of study time potential.
>>
>>78458061
Driving but I'll be the one driving the whole way and I'll have passengers. Can't really do much with audio because of that so I'll just have to cram in some book study before or after I drive.
>>
>>78458243
Oh yeah I forgot some people have friends.
>>
>>78458391
Chin up, you'll have friends one day!

Which should I learn, French or Japanese? On a side note, I'm very much interested in Japan and everything connected with it, but when it comes to literature, French seems to stand out as a more reasonable choice.
>>
>>78459469

Depends on how much you want to be spoonfed.

None of those sentences save the last require commas. Unlike English, the rules for comma placement in German are rigid and clearly defined so they have to be learned formally. A misplaced German comma is an error.

Most (though not all) of your articles are random. Check every word in a dictionary and see how they are really used. If there is a preposition like "in" or "zu", look at which case it governs. Prepositions always take a certain case regardless of whether the case appears to have any semantic significance. "In" is somewhat of an exception though as it governs two different cases, but you can make sense of that.

German employs a word order in which the verb can only be first, second or last in a sentence. In most of your sentences the verb comes third, which is one hundred percent wrong. It cannot come third.

Fühlen implies feeling something in particular. If there's nothing in particular that is being felt and only the way of feeling is described (ill, well), then you use the reflexive particle "sich" (look up how it changes for person). In archaic English you would say "I feel me well" for "Ich fühle mich gut", where "me" is the reflexive particle, but not anymore.

what language should I learn that doesn't feel like a waste of time?
can kind of read some Russian, but it was a rando bit of studying because it felt easier.

I'm going to move to the UK in a month or so, so that's also making me less interested in learning anything, since I already know English.

But it's Glasgow, so heavy accented English with lots of ""Scots"" words.

IIRC brits learn some French as a foreign language in school?

It's hard but that's the reality of learning Russian. It's a very good book. For other resources I would supplement it with voice lessons to ensure your pronunciations are correct. That's the hardest part for me so far. I've been using Google to play individual words aloud, I haven't been able to find a better tool yet. I try to spend more time studying than researching so I don't fall for the researching meme.

It's mostly thanks to a single user who's done 339,817 of the 392,895 total pronounciations for Tatar.

That same guy is also responsible for 9,497 pronunciations in Mari, 15,129 pronunciations in Bashkir, and another 7 pronounciations in some other language(s), presumably Russian.

Help me /lang/
I right now torn between learning French and German.

The thing is, I like Germany and the German language much more than French, but French would be more useful for me professionally and academically (International Law grad student here).

So help me guise, should I give up learning the language of the country I like the most (to visit, maybe live, get to know better and all that shit) and that I find most fun studying, only to take a more utilitarian approach and just learn the language that's just going to be more useful for me, even if I don't like it so much?

I'm a Portuguese native speaker btw, so French would also be easier for me.
>>
>>78474670
>you learn a language this way
>you unconsciously start talking femininely in real life
>everyone thinks you're gay
>>
>>78474846
Who fucking cares about what's most "useful", you're not going to stick with a language or give much of a fuck about it if you don't enjoy the process when learning it. You plan to even someday go to germany even, maybe even live there. Not to be gay, but follow your heart dude. Learn German. Don't waste time with shit that you don't care about.
>>
>>78474935
this
>>
>>78474846
>>78474935
And to add to what I am saying:
German
>you look forward to studying when you get home from wage slaving/school
>you can't wait to be able to watch that favorite german movie of yours without subtitles
>or finally read that books that's never been translated for some reason
French
>it would be a somewhat small advantage to your career but you could get by just fine without it
>you won't care about studying it at all
>eventually studying gets tedious
>it's very easy for you to give up on this language
I think the choice here is very obvious anon. Language learning is supposed to be fun and something you look forward to, not a chore or something you HAVE to do.
>>
>>78474846
You'll find that you absorb a language more easily if you're interested in a culture and its people.
This manifests itself in effort.
You'll find more interesting resources to practice the language with.
You'll make a conscious effort to practice the language at any time of day.

If you want to learn French, try to find some aspect of French culture that you enjoy and keep looking for written and graphical material about it.

I tried learning German, but realized that there wasn't really anything interesting about Germany and German products, and that it's apparently somewhat difficult to find interesting comics or television to translate.

With Japanese, it was completely different. There's already a massive English-Japanese consumer entertainment base, which makes it easy to find something that you enjoy and get consistent practice.
>>
Anybody in the position where you feel somewhat comfortable with reading and listening but you have a limited vocabulary and when you're greeted with opportunities to speak and/or write the language you're studying, you freeze up and struggle to say anything? Whenever I've tried to write posts in my language of choice in those generals it takes me forever because I've got to look up words and make sure I'm using them correctly and it feels like I'm walking on pins and needles the whole time because I'm going to surely be roasted if I make even the slightest fuck-up.

Dunno man
>>
>>78475186
Getting roasted is a pretty easy way to learn instead of stressing yourself. It's a pretty basic online rule to just post the wrong thing when you need help, as some pedant will correct you.
>>
>>78475186
>and make sure I'm using them correctly
I literally don't worry about this
dictionary definition is usually good enough.
Languages these days always have some way of figuring out the intent of the word.
With Japanese, you have kanji which offer their own meaning.
English has roots in almost every European language. Most of it is Germanic, while loaning from Latin, French, and Spanish. You can use those roots to determine the actual meaning and usage of a word.

Even supposing you couldn't figure out a word based on its definition, you could use websites like alc.co.jp to see example sentences a word is used in.

>>
Not sure if this is in one of those pictures, but to anyone learning German, the University of Helsinki has a free site, deutsche virtuelle grammatik, which is available in Swedish, English and German in addition to Finnish.
http://donnerwetter.kielikeskus.helsinki.fi/DVG/index.htm
>>
Fluent in English here.

Why is it that people say "I've got a question" when they want to ask a question?

I mean, why do they use "I've got" ?
I have got a question? How long have they had that question for or what?
Why don't they just say "I have a question"

"I've got to tell you something" > "I have to tell you something"
"I've got to hurry" > "I have to hurry"

The rule for the past participle is like
"I have been well."
"I have taken care of it."
And the participle of Get is Gotten, not Got

So what the fuck is "I have got" ?
>>
>>78479478
>So what the fuck is "I have got" ?
an idiomatic phrase.
>>
Is there anything like Rikaisama for French or other Romance languages? That is, an addon that lets you hover over words to see the definition?
>>
>>78479536
not really
>>78479478
"I've got a question" -> "I have a question"
Same thing. Adding or removing a 'got' makes no difference.

"I've got to tell you something": "got to" -> "need to"

You know, the internet was invented to connect people from far away.

Well, that's the closest English phonetics will get you, but you're gonna have an accent if you just say the English "oi". If you are relying on phonetical notation then consult the IPA for German.

Russians dialects have been standardized out of existence following mass literacy. There's no more variety than in American English. There's basically one highly distinctive manner of speaking and that's in the south.
