I played it like ten years ago, was pretty cozy

I can't say whether or not it's actually popular though

It was for a time, though the Big Bang update killed it for a time. Haven't heard much about it since.

Have a few fond memories of when my school friends and I played.

Almost everyone in his early twenties has fond memories of this game. It used to be crazy pouplar.
In my school almost everyone was an Assassin. There was a common belief that Assassins are the best, I actually got teased pretty hard for going Bandit. It was worth it, though: Savage Blow was the coolest.

Definitely used to be. I stopped playing around when pirates were added to GMS and don't really hear it talked about much anymore.
