Shelby Foote is exactly right. The main issue of the Civil War was not slavery. When will the truth be taught in the schools? The South may have lost the war but all states lost because the States Rights protection under the Constitution was severely weakened. At the start of the war the US was an alliance of individual sovereign nation states. At the end the US was a nation of provinces.
