Bump with some English:

Israel has expressed anger to the Swiss government over a hotel's sign that told Jewish guests to shower before using the swimming pool.

The sign in English, at Apartmenthaus Paradies in the mountain resort of Arosa, triggered much criticism.

Another sign told Jewish guests to use a refrigerator only at certain times.

Israel's deputy foreign minister called it "an anti-Semitic act of the worst and ugliest kind". Reports say the hotel has now removed the signs.

A photo of the shower sign was tweeted, after an Orthodox Jewish guest spoke about it on Israel's Channel 2 TV.

Gratis german Sat TV is available everywhere in Europe on Astra 19.2E
You have to sort between soft porn call TV, telemarketing channels and televangelists.

Phoenix, ZDF Neo and 3sat have interesting programmes.
You can have your daily soaps or dubbed films on Sat1, Kabel 1 or Pro7, this is how I try to keep my german afloat.

French :
Not that bad, what may prevent comprehension is the fact that you should not pronunciate "gu" as [gu] but as [g].
"Figue" should be pronunced like "Fig" in english.
This is because in french, a "g" before a "e" is pronunced as a [ʒ]. We put a silent "u" hereafter to prevent this.

The double "cc" in "occitan" should be prononuced [ks], like in "ox" in english.
>>
>>78349120
Ah, that makes some sense. As for the cc=> ks, didn't know that. Is that true for all double-c in french, or just in Occitan and perhaps a few other instances.
>>
>>78348810

I'm a big fan of Arte. Some of the shows are bizarre, granted, but there are some comfy docs and it allows me to watch them in French if I want, which is very handy.

I was never a TV fan, this is the first one i've owned since 2013 and even back then I only used it for gaming. However, having no wifi in my new apartment forced me to turn it on and it's really helped, tb h

Some portuguese for ya:

A Guerra do Paraguai foi um conflito militar que ocorreu na América do Sul, entre os anos de 1864 e 1870. Nesta guerra o Paraguai lutou conta a Tríplice Aliança formada por Brasil, Argentina e Uruguai
>>
>>78349328
I think it is a general rule (except maybe for foreign words).
I can only think about words where "cc" is pronunced [ks] :
- accentuer
- accepter
- occiput
- accent

Oh, now that I think about it, here are some that are only pronunced like a regular [k] :
- occasion
- occulter

The difficulty with french comes from the fact that in order to make sense how to prononuce a word, you somehow have to identify how it is formed.

>>78349392
Arte is a bit weird, true; too bad their docs are only available 7 days after the airing. Some are available (search "arte" + "uptobox") but it's seldom the case for the most obscure ones.

An Irish bull is a ludicrous, incongruent or logically absurd statement, generally unrecognized as such by its author.

>Although, strictly speaking, Irish bulls are so structured grammatically as to be logically meaningless, their actual effect upon listeners is usually to give vivid illustrations to obvious truths. Hence, as John Pentland Mahaffy, Provost of Trinity College, Dublin, famously observed, "an Irish bull is always pregnant", i.e. with truthful meaning.[2] The "father" of the Irish bull is often said to be Sir Boyle Roche,[3] who once asked "Why we should put ourselves out of our way to do anything for posterity, for what has posterity ever done for us?".[4] Roche may have been Sheridan's model for Mrs Malaprop.[5]

>"He'll regret it till his dying day, if ever he lives that long."
>"If I could drop dead right now, I'd be the happiest man alive."
>"Always go to other people's funerals, otherwise they won't come to yours."
>"If your grandfather was alive right now he'd be spinning in his grave."

Irish people speak in a more idiosyncratic way that doesn't strictly make sense in proper English. So you very well might understand the words but not so much the structure.

The second one for sure. The first one is still understandable and honestly most brits would find it endearing.

Little tip:

>guests

you should pronounce the "sts" with more flow rather than accentuating the transition of t to s

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1FQnNBs8btD

the "o" is formed further forward in the mouth than in French (at least british English)

The 1950s I think. Scottish Gaidhlig is closer to pre-reform Irish than modern Irish is, at least spelling-wise, so it's not entirely gone. Not until the Scots stop speaking it at least.

Maybe but very small, overall it's all the rural France and the villages which are dying slowly with the time
Some regional languages are still alive however and preserved by local groups, mostly near Basque Country, Corsica or Brittany

>Are you having a good time in Germany?

To keep it as short as possible, I enjoy it here but I far preferred my life in France(lived there for about 2 years).

I currenty live in Cologne which has some lovely parts to it but out of the "altstadt" and direct centre of town is nothing to write home about and pretty fucking dirty. Then again, so are most cities. Munich was much the same, too.

>the people are really nice

Yes and no. I find that if I'm chatting to friends of friends or people that know me at least a little bit they will be really nice and very inquisitive. Outside of that I need to say that honestly the average Germans you bump into in shops or on the street lack the basic manners that I've experienced in all the other places I've lived (UK, France and Norway). Please and thank you seemingly don't exist, people will literally push you out of the way if you're browsing an item in a supermarket, failing that someone has walked in front of me and then backed up until I was forced to move. "excuse me" or "pardon" when you do something you didn't mean to is very much so not in their mindset. I don't know how to put it, when you know them they are really decent people but on the streets, all manners and basic decency are thrown out the window

I realise I sound butthurt but it's just what I've witnessed. Nowhere I've been before has had such a basic manner issue as Germany.

Of course, it's a big generalisation to say that they are all rude in a public settting but it is anecdotal evidence. ( want to clarify that before a butthurt Hans reads it).

>What about the food? I had some pretty bad memories with it.

Really? That's a shame. The food (German traditional) is pretty simple but I honestly really enjoy it. I don't eat it all that much as it tends to be heavy as fuck but it's great winter food. I live almost opposite a Brauhaus that serves excellent sausage and beer.

>Are you a student ? Or do you have a job that allows you to travel a lot ?

None of the above. I had a decent level of savings and always had the itch to travel a bit. That including the fact that I wanted to learn other languages led me to up sticks and leave the uk in 2014. Only been back twice for long weekends.

I could have stayed in France, I had a comfy job in a really pretty village. If it wasn't for the lack of young people I reckon I'd still be there.

Russian poems? Russian poems!

Пpoйди oпacныe гoдa.
Teбя пoдcтepeгaют вcюдy.
Ho ecли выйдeшь цeл - тoгдa
Tы, нaкoнeц, пoвepишь чyдy,

И, нaкoнeц, yвидишь ты,
Чтo cчacтья и нe нaдo былo,
И нa пoлжизни нe хвaтилo,

Чтo чepeз кpaй пepeлилacь
Bocтopгa твopчecкoгo чaшa,
Чтo вce yж нe мoe, a нaшe,

Пopoю бyдeшь вcпoминaть
O дeтcкoй тoй мeчтe, o зыбкoй,
Чтo cчacтиeм пpивыкли звaть!
I vnov' - poryvy yunykh let,
I vzryvy sil, i kraynost' mneniy...
No schast'ya ne bylo - i net.
Khot' v etom bol'she net somneniy!

Proydi opasnyye goda.
Tebya podsteregayut vsyudu.
No yesli vyydesh' tsel - togda
Ty, nakonets, poverish' chudu,

I, nakonets, uvidish' ty,
Chto schast'ya i ne nado bylo,
Chto sey nesbytochnoy mechty
I na polzhizni ne khvatilo,

Chto cherez kray perelilas'
Vostorga tvorcheskogo chasha,
Chto vse uzh ne moye, a nashe,
I s mirom utverdilas' svyaz',-

I tol'ko s nezhnoyu ulybkoy
Poroyu budesh' vspominat'
O detskoy toy mechte, o zybkoy,
Chto schastiyem privykli zvat'!

little bitta kraut for you all
