Downs Syndrome is caused by an extra chromosome 21, early potential for it can be found during pregnancy using a blood test.

But here's the part that makes Iceland's little experiment pretty barbaric.

No in utero test can give a 100% certainty of a baby actually developing downs syndrome, a blood test gives a warning and even a really extensive amniocentesis test for tristomy 21 can only give up to 99% certainty.

You can easily find many stories of people who had amniocentesis done were told their baby would have downs syndrome and after birth they actually didn't. This isn't a case of "Well lets remove the appendix because there's a good chance it'll cause problems later" this is killing the fucking fetus based on "Pretty sure, but not 100%" testing.
