Why does Russia have so few castles?
There was no reason for Russians to fortify because nobody wants to invade Russia.

We had less medieval population though and we still built a few castles in Finland
It is actually quite easy. Russian laws of succession worked in a way that required feudal lord to regularly move from one place to another, so they never invested in something beautiful or linked to their family.
So we had a lot of kremlins cities and monasteries, but castles - very rarely.

Medieval Russian architecture was primarily wooden, because our building technique sucked and building with stone was very expensive. Virtually all castles were made of wood and burnt down at some point.
