I always found it ironic that russians use a polish word to insult themselves.

Do Russians actually use this word or was it just someone on urbandictionary making shit up?

I've seen recording of russians calling eachother bydlo on the street.
Probably not as popular of an insult but its definitely there.

Actually it became popular in early 1800's, when poland became a part of russian empire. We needed a name for pollacs, whitch this half-minded-pollac-peasants would understand and "bydlo" was just perfect.

no need to act so smug
russian peasants were rightless serfs and were treated no better than poles

It was the other way around my friend.
Look at Dostoevsky and his rabid berserk Polonophobia in his writings.
All of it caused by pampered Polish nobility who acted like smug shits all day long and treated their russian equivalents with disgust. Poles called Russians bydlo and it sticked.
Same with чмo that originated from yiddish שמאָק (shmock).
It's just deep Russian inferiority complex and trying to act like youre above your fellow russians.
