Although India was also friendly with China during the early years of the PRC, relations soured fast at the end of the 50s and led into the 1962 border conflict.

After the Cold War ended, India moved towards a more free market system and closer ties with Western cunts, but still maintains rather close relations with Moscow.

This mess arose after the Chinese occupation of Tibet in the 50s; during the colonial period, the British had designated Tibet as a buffer zone between China and British India. Soviet government was supporting anti-colonial movements.
Before the separation of British Raj indian independence movement was searching for foreign allies. And in the early 1920s a group of indian marxists has migrated through Afghanistan to soviet Tashkent, where they have founded CPI.
Later (in the late 20s, if I'm not mistaken) Jawaharlal Nehru, one of the leaders of left wing of Indian National Congress and later - the first prime minister. After that Nehru have decided to mix the unmixable - soviet approach to economics and capitalism. Soviets have supported him with cheap credits, engineers and technical support by (since postcolonial India was an agrarian shithole). The greatest pride of soviet engineers working abroad was the "steel giant of Bokaro" - a huge steel factory.
And indians were sending some export goods, like medicine and rails. And, of course, indian movies were popular in the USSR.

Soviet Union was against imperialism all around the world, and India was a colonial nation oppressed by a NATO member so its obvious how a friendship can develop from this. lots of Soviet experts went to India and helped them modernize. I imagine this friendship persists between Russian Federation and India today because of common rivals.
