It was seen as unpatriotic in the early 20th century if you even mentioned your heritage by hyphenating your nationality. Now days it's the opposite and if you question a heritage fag's heritage, ie telling a German-American he's just American, it is seen as extremely insensitive and people will pillory you as xenophobe.
