Funny fact: Finland is commonly called "the land of the thousand lakes" in the Nordic countries. Obviously there's much more than a thousand, but the point is that Finns see the high number and density of lakes in Finland as a defining characteristic of their landscape, and use it to create their identity.

The funny thing is that while Finland has about 50 000 lakes, Sweden has about 100 000 of them. If we take the areas of each country into account (340k km2 for Finland, 450k km2 for Sweden), we find that Sweden doesn't only have twice the amount of lakes that Finland has, but they're also much more densely distributed than in Finland.

So if anything, Sweden should be the "land of the thousand lakes". Finland doesn't excel at anything.

During the invasion of Scandinavia, Sweden kept neutral, but because much of their income was generated by exporting iron, they continued to sell it to Nazi Germany. Sweden would not help Finland fight off the Soviet attack, but 8,000 Swedes volunteered for the Finnish army. Sensing the impending trouble, nearly everyone in the country pitched in to bolster the Swedish defense lines. The meager Swedish army nearly doubled overnight from volunteers and by war’s end tripled from that. Civilians built shelters, scanned the skies for enemy aircraft, donated time and money and made military vehicles and supplies. Germany told Sweden to stay neutral, but "pro-German," meaning they would have to abide by Germany’s demands. The Swedes would not listen to Germany’s threats and told them if Sweden was invaded they would blow up the iron ore mines. Although Sweden was surrounded by chaotic war, its citizens led relatively normal lives. However, every Swedish family was affected by it because so many civilians were called into the military reserves.

We did not give iron ore to anyone. As a neutral nation, we engaged in trade with a number of countries, Germany among them. As long as our neutrality was respected, we were glad to sell them stuff, but if they had made themselves our enemies, we would have denied them anything we could.

Yeah, that's not really what happened, Ole. The German demands for troop transports through Sweden were refused until after hostilities ceased in Norway. After Norway fell, the Swedish refusals became untenable and we had to give in or be invaded ourselves.
