Obviously this is no indicator of 'southerness', but traveling throughout WV I did not see one single Dixie flag. The institution I was also interviewing at REALLY was pushing how diverse they were. None of that has to do with politics really... they are so abysmally, unbelievably poor that they just want jobs and new people.

Rural PA on the other hand felt far more conservative in comparison.

The South isn't monolithic. WV is like North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky.

Not him, but you should really visit WV sometime. It will give you some insight into a part of America that's only vaguely understood. The state is incredibly beautiful, but the societies are incredibly poor. Avoiding and ignoring places like WV is why people like Bernie say ignorant shit like "White people don't know poverty". Go to WV. Seriously. In addition to the hiking and beautiful Scotland-esque scenery, you'll see a part of America that will change how you see things
