They're still pretty expensive, but not as expensive.
For example onnibus from Helsinki to Tampere today would be 9€ before 21 and 5€ after 21.
They don't have student discounts.

VR is either 21€ (fast fancy train) or 16€ (two crappy trains).
Student discount for crappy trains is -50% and -30% for decent trains.

It's the longer trips where it gets expensive. 37€ to Jyväskylä, 57€ to Oulu.
All one way btw.
