I have strong doubts that thinkpads are manufactured in better conditions than macs.
Nonetheless, regardless of whether I buy it or not it'll still be produced and pushed elsewhere, and other people who don't have the time or effort to even consider the production conditions will buy it.
Hell, most non-meme communists can even make the point that capitalists are also victims of capitalism - because they're dedicating all their time to doing capital's bidding, instead of doing whatever they'd want to do in a classless stateless yada yada it's not happening.

Poor working conditions, etc, are all secondary objections to capitalism that appeal to emotion, not the primary issues involving surplus labour and so on and whatever.

I'm upset because it's a stupid argument, I'm not even a communist. Though the hypocrisy argument could well be applied because I'm inclined towards protectionism. Again, though, I'm always going to buy the cheapest thing - I just want the state to ramp up the prices on foreign things to level the playing field.

Got really interested in the etymology around Cannabis yesterday. It seems politically, "marijuana" is a term of derision and "cannabis" is a term of advocacy, so I did some research.

"Mariguana" is a Mexican-Spanish slang word from the 1800s used in Mexico and a few other parts of Latin America (due to Mexican influence). The exact etymology isn't known, but it's believed to be a Native word. Since cannabis mostly arrived to the United States through Mexico, "Marijuana" became the name of the street drug. Before the early 20th century, "Marijuana" wasn't used in any part of the English speaking world, and the name stuck due to anti-cannabis American politicians using the scary sounding street name when campaigning against cannabis, intentionally associating the drug with illegal immigrants and Mexican criminals (they weren't wrong).

The plant/flower/drug has had many names throughout history as an illicit substances that has attracted many slang idioms. What did Anglophones call Marijuana before we had the word Marijuana (before the early 1900s)? "Hemp" referred to the fibers which were used to make rope, clothes, paper, and sacks. "Cannabis" is the scientific name of the plant, as well as the earliest name for the plant, used by Herodotus in the 5th century BC in Ancient Greek, the same word "Qunubu" being used in the Semitic languages and Persian. Cannabis is the most generalised term the refers to every part of the plant without any bias. Sources before the 1900s are most likely to refer to the plant as Cannabis?

"Hashish" is an Arabic word used in much of the world (Europe, Africa, Asia). It's actually a specific preparation of cannabis, but it's often used to refer to the drug in general. "Weed", "grass", and very similar terms exist in a lot of languages due to the colour and the nature of the plant.

In general, cannabis has a lot of names because it's a very silly plant that deserves a lot of silly names.

hashish-by-farmer-dodds.jpg
394KB, 1024x768px
>In the 18th century, a French army officer wrote that due to the use of hashish “the mass of [Egypt’s] male population is in a perpetual state of stupor!”[6] During Napoléon Bonaparte's invasion of Egypt in 1798, alcohol was not available per Egypt being an Islamic country.[7] In lieu of alcohol, Bonaparte's troops resorted to trying hashish, which they found to their liking.[7] As a result of the conspicuous consumption of hashish by the troops, the smoking of hashish and consumption of drinks containing it was banned in October 1800, although the troops mostly ignored the order.[7] Subsequently, beverages containing hashish were banned in Egyptian cafes; cafes that sold them were shut down and "boarded up", and their proprietors were jailed.[7] During this time, hashish imported from other countries was destroyed by burning.[7] Upon the end of the occupation in 1801, French troops brought supplies of hashish with them back to France.[7]

Hashish is ground and compressed cannabis. Very good for storage and transportation, and more potent than flower buds that haven't been processed. This was historically the the type of cannabis used recreationally in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Particularly in France, where it's still a popular term despite the fact hashish isn't as big as it used to be.

>Cannabis was also known to the ancient Assyrians, who discovered its psychoactive properties through the Aryans.[175] Using it in some religious ceremonies, they called it qunubu (meaning "way to produce smoke"), a probable origin of the modern word "cannabis".[176] The Aryans also introduced cannabis to the Scythians, Thracians and Dacians, whose shamans (the kapnobatai—"those who walk on smoke/clouds") burned cannabis flowers to induce trance.[177]

>Cannabis has an ancient history of ritual use and is found in pharmacological cults around the world. Hemp seeds discovered by archaeologists at Pazyryk suggest early ceremonial practices like eating by the Scythians occurred during the 5th to 2nd century BCE, confirming previous historical reports by Herodotus.[178] It was used by Muslims in various Sufi orders as early as the Mamluk period, for example by the Qalandars.[179] Smoking pipes uncovered in Ethiopia and carbon-dated to around 1320 CE were found to have traces of cannabis.[180]

Cannabis grows indigenously in most of Afro-Eurasia. It grows especially dense in hot and humid regions. It was brought to the Americas by Columbus' men to make rope. Hemp fibre has been utilised since prehistoric times as a very strong, sturdy fibre, which in fact probably eclipses its use as a recreational drug, medicine, or entheogen.

You have a choice between phones and an, albeit unrealistic, choice of not having a phone at all. This is a moral cop out assuming the charges laid out upon capitalism are true.

that's not at all what I'm saying though.
its not about "gotta oppose the system!" its you making conscious choices which directly contradict what you supposedly stand for.

if you spend your time talking about the evils of conspicuous consumption/waste, bourgeois lifestyles, and general opulence being negative/destructive; yet in turn also choose to do all of the above the you are a hypocrite simple as.
you do have other options, and you don't need to detach from society completely or "cripple" yourself at all by simply not being a hyper-consumer.
but in the end nearly all western communists are LARPer fashionistas who's thoughts are irrelevant.

If the peasant is somehow receiving food as part of some higher rank in the feudal system then he is not a peasant, and he would be a hypocrite for opposing feudalism then still.

I'm really into history, and cannabis goes surprisingly far back in history and seems to have been found in nearly every part of Africa, Europe, and Asia, and was widely utilised. It makes it's prohibition even more confusing, as it isn't a lethal or addictive drug. It was predominantly used as fiber, but various times in various places its psychoactive properties were realised and used recreationally or in ceremony. Cannabis flower buds are only psychoactive when cooked or burnt, so without applying some heat to it it wouldn't get you high. Agriculturally hemp is probably the most economical fiber crop even today. This is why a lot of lords in history maintained fields of hemp. Not for getting high, but for making clothes, rope, paper, and sacks.

It's one of the few commodities that go as far back in human history as it does. Rather impressive. I think the real reason cannabis gained an illicit reputation is because civilisation chose its drug of choice. Alcohol is truly a civilised drug. It's based on grain and fruit surplus, works as a meal replacement or supplement, made in a similar fashion to bread (and often from the same crops). Cannabis is a more wild drug and easier to prohibit than alcohol which is built on the very essence of agriculture.

a better analogy would be an adult who eats overpriced sugar-filled kiddie cereal every day for breakfast because he has zero willpower and is addicted to sugar/is a manchild V.S. someone who eats some simple cereal with honey and nuts in it for a tasteful healthy breakfast.

both are eating factory farmed/made cereals from a capitalism system, but I'd never take the ChocoMunchXtreem eater seriously if he started lecturing me on healthy mature eating habits.

A better way of phrasing this would be that people who oppose the system shouldn't be charged with hypocrisy for living by however they are forced to, but, this doesn't extend to luxury items that are still not very accessible in even first-world countries.

There is no physical compound in cannabis that causes addiction. You won't suffer physical withdrawal from not getting your weed fix like you do from tobacco, opium, or even alcohol at a certain stage of alcoholism. People get addicted to cannabis the same way you get addicted to video games or escapist mediums. By being a pussy who can't stand being in the world world. There's no genuine physical addiction. Just psychological weakness. Being too much of a bitch to stand the world without being high.

it's all about convenience and ease of service

Because of the way incentives are structured, someone else will do it if you don't. Even if the business owner didn't share profits, somebody else would realise that niche in the market and start a business - and they wouldn't share the profits either. The problem is the system of incentives as opposed to an individual business owner being a bastard.

Of course you could have a nice business owner who does share profits, but all he's doing is being a nice boss - he's not any more anti-capitalist. The same is true of luxury items. Whether or not you buy it individually, there's a demand for it and most people aren't even going to think about the morality behind it. If you want it, buy it. It's not hypocrisy when your objection is to the root system.

The mug in pic related should not exist, it is a horrifying thing - but as it does exist, I want it.

The difference between physical addiction and psychological addiction is:

Physical addiction: a chemical compound causes extreme discomfort, pain, or even death when you don't get your fix.

Psychological addiction: you as an individual are too weak to control yourself.

I make the distinction because many drugs are genuinely physically addictive, even legal ones. Cannabis addiction isn't a genuine addiction. It's just weak people who have a lot of problems and use weed to escape the real world, like people addicted to video games or the internet.

It used to be thought there were addictive compounds in cannabis. Research so far shows there is no known compound that would cause withdrawal symptoms. I read some centuries old stuff on cannabis, and they often talk about the "cannabis addict". Science so far says there's no proof there's anything there causing addiction. I'd say it's comparable to the internet. There isn't a compound in it that causes addiction, but it's perfect for people with an addictive personality who want to escape their troubles.

yes, people may say otherwise but symbols are important and to oppose capitalism yet willfully take part in this sort of hyper-consumer idolatry is very suspect.
it shows your convictions are not as important to you as your addictions, and are simply another piece of jewelry to hang off your carcass and show off to your fellows rather than anything of real significance.

its less like a peasant who eats a large roast boar given to him, and more like a vegan who wears leather jackets and snakeskin boots yet moans on endlessly about the plight of animals.
