Yeah if you don't include Canada and America
>>
>>78113420
>4 countries came out nicely
>50+ are literally on humanitarian crisis
>>
>>78113539
That's 4 countries better than Spain, France, Portugal, or any of the others.
>>
>>78111416
Because the Portuguese are genetically flawed and inferior and those who were ruled by those subhumans are much inferior like a bunch of beasts.
>>
At least you could have painted Mozambique too
>>
>>78113583
London has a paki major what the fuck are you talking about.
>>
>>78112207
Never read the whole thing actually
>>
>>78112207
Very few people have read all of it.

Most have read quite a few passages and should know the general synopsis.

It's a very dense book to read whole, for most people.

but is it good? also is it fantastic like with monsters and stuff or purely realistic? the article isn't clear
>>
>>78115609
It's definitely fantastic. It's an epic poem with homages to the Iliad and Odyssey.

It was written in the 1570's, around the time the empire was still pretty new and booming, and it's about the tale of how the Portuguese, with the help of the Christian God, overcame every obstacle in the path to greatness despite interference from roman gods, particularly Bacchus.

It uses the first voyage to India (1498) as a central story to go back/forward from (it starts in medias res) to important figures in portuguese/lusitanian history, from kings to generals to sailors.

At some point, the Portuguese gain the favour of Neptune and Venus via their might against storms and armies, and the sailors aboard the ship that sailed to India are invited to the "World Island", effectively becoming heroes (in the classical sense of being almost deities).

It also features the Adamastor, which was the name of the monster thought to be guarding the Cape of Good hope, which was the last biggest obstacle in reaching India.

It's a pretty neat and patriotic epic poem.

>>78115609
For the most part, though, with the exception of the Adamastor and the climax of the book (the World Island), the characters themselves are oblivious to the fantastical/roman characters, and mostly just follow the Christian faith against real, physical threats caused by them.

The narrator switches from character to character depending on the part of the story and only when it's Camões himself (or one of the Gods) is it aware of the conspiracy behind the events.

Four of the top ten spots on quality-of-life indexes belong to the United Kingdom and her former colonies. Want to take a guess as to how many Spanish colonies made that list?
>>
>>78113420
>The UK is the only European country with a respectable colonial legacy tbqh

The UK babysitted Canada, Australia and New Zealand until around 1930. The US was ruled by english and received a shitton of white european emigrants. The rest of their colonies are shitholes just like the spanish and portuguese ones. Well, Macao is rich as fuck, though.

thank you, it is definitely interesting, especially its hellenistic motives, i will read it when i find a good translation
>>
>>78115819
What's your point exactly?
>>
>>78115844
Unfortunately, I don't think there's a good translation. Maybe a prosaic adaptation would be the best way to approach it?

It's very much linked to the language (even more so than Shakespeare and English), and attempting to translate it in poem form would defeat the purpose, really, since you'd have to come up with a new poem which would have to be good enough by itself. Poetry is always tricky.

You can probably find studies about it describing its story and structure and such, though, and you'd get as much value from it as you could without actually having to learn Portuguese.

You might also enjoy doing so for "A Mensagem", by Fernando Pessoa. It's also very patriotic and nationalistic, and almost as important historically/literately but much more modern and short.

This amount of butthurt. It's fucking hilarious. Spain hates being associated with their creations.

UK don't give a shit about America, Canada, Australia or NZ, they even have commonwhealth
>>
>>78116197

Actually the most ironic thing coming from Iberian countries is the fact they promoted racemixing degeneracy and don't want mixed people from their colonies in their countries.

>don't want mixed people from their colonies in their countries

Sorry but we are not slavs or white supremacists. Our issue with them is that 90% of sudacas are criminals or have an anti-social behaviour. They are terrible people.
