You're asking the wrong question. Where did the British accent come from is what you should be asking.

British accents developed after American independence when it became popular with the elite and later on with commenors. Our accents are closer to what Shakespeare used to speak.

It also happened in Brazil and Spanish America.

Plus, the smaller seed nations evolved further and with less exterior input, which is why the European versions of the languages are *usually* harder to understand to any random foreigner.

They say it came from Germany, as the queen was German and the folk simply started speaking "the queen's English", as it were. I doubt it's true.

So Inland North is the Great Lakes/Chicago accent. North Central is the Minnesota/Yooper accent.
