Imagine, if you didn't waste your time with this ching chong shit, imagine what you could have had accomplished instead if you had invested that time in something worthwhile.
You could have learned a craft and made something beautiful .
You could have learned to play an instrument and come to appreciate music much more.
You could have trained your body to be something else than your current bloated, weak physique.
You could have learned a useful or interesting language with an actual literary corpus.
Instead, you chose to waste your precious, limited time that is granted to you on this earth to learn to a dubious degree of fluency a ugly, worthless language that has never produced literature of notice, just so that you could further waste your life on comic books and video games.
What a sad, sad life must that be.
So sad, that I'd rather kill myself rather than live through it.

Can you give me more infos about it? How many kanji does it teach you?
>>
>>78052594
it teaches the first 1008 jouyou kanji used in the japanese 1st through 6th grade, but it teaches you through a native point of view with jyukugo and native definitions for each kanji. I'll upload more photos in a minute.

It has 3 different modes, 「かきとり」(the one in the original photo) where you learn the stroke order, 「ドリル」which teaches onyomi, kunyomi, and jyukugo, and then 「力だめし」which tests you on your knowledge of either the stroke order or readings+jyukugo.

are there any math/programming minded people around? I've got a problem you might be able to help out with
problem: want to reduce number of daily vocab reviews

info: currently at 5930 words
0~5700@ 50/day : 430~500 reviews/day : 75~80% retention
5700~present@ 30/day : 430~480 reviews/day : 80~85% retention

aim: no more than 300 reviews/day, if possible
仮に、 learning/new cards have 80% retention and mature cards also have 80% retention. Will 30 new cards/day ever fall around 300 reviews/day with that retention and if not, what number of new cards/day would?
>>
>>78063496
>no more than 300 reviews/day
I did 20 new cards a day and had a retention of 85%-90%, but at the end of Core10k I was almost reaching 300 a day.

At the current pace you might end up with 800 reviews a day when you reach 8~10k words.

Not sure how to stay under 300 reviews, but you should instead try to keep a daily amount of time allocated to Anki - 300 reviews a day take me as long as 100 reviews took in the past (around 1 hour). Turn off new cards until you reach that daily amount of time and then start introducing new cards by increments of 5. You should just feel the real weight of if after a month, though, so it's kinda hard to balance things.

Did you learn the meaning and then the reading of kanji (RTK) ?

or did you learn the reading with the meaning (kodansha) ?

I like the pace and mnemonics of RTK, but can't shake the feeling that i'm ignoring what's important by leaving out reading.

That said i'm learning the meaning and stroke order so much faster i feel like i could do it all in 6 months and then focus on the readings..

Is it normal to not be prepared for anything when beginning to read? Even with stuff that's supposedly braindead easy like Yotsubato and Hanahira, I spend ages on each sentence searching and trying to make sense of grammar constructs and words I've never seen before, and even when I manage to figure out what it all means, I don't feel like I've learned anything from it.
>>
>>78072947
>and even when I manage to figure out what it all means, I don't feel like I've learned anything from it.
You're impatience is born from the gap between all the words and grammar structures you currently know while ignoring the years it took to reach it.

>>
>>78072947

Completely. I think that the very first time I sat down to actually read Japanese that wasn't out of a textbook for English speakers, it took me 30 minutes to get through the first couple of pages of Yotsuba.

Just sit down and diligently stick your nose to the grindstone. Don't be impatient or get frustrated. You're in it for the long haul. It'll click.

>>78073555
>>78073910

The single most important quality for learning material is that YOU WANT TO READ IT. Japanese for natives is going to be hard as fuck at first no matter what you pick. If you don't give a shit about the thing that you're reading, you're going to hate every minute of your life if you try to force your way through. As such, you should use something that you would pick out of your own volition for enjoyment.

I know that some people will frown on this, but it's actually a good idea to start with something that's text hooker-friendly. That'll save you a lot of time looking things up. Just try to read the sentence on your own before using any assistance.

What should I do to get the most out of reading?
>>
>>78075662

Spend a lot of time doing it (several hours every day), and try not to enter "autopilot" where you fall into a pattern of using J -> E dictionaries for every word that you don't recognize without straining your brain a bit. Have DoJG handy for shit that you don't understand. As you start to feel the level of difficulty lowering a bit, start using Goo (native Japanese dictionary) whenever you don't understand something.

Also, anki. Seriously. At least Core.

If ところで is not at the beginning of a sentence, but in the middle, and followed after a past tense verb, does it have to mean "としても"? For example:

「彼は下草をかきわけたところで、なにかが彼の体を木陰に引きずり込んだ。」

Could this sentence mean "Having just pushed through the weeds, something dragged his body into the shade of the trees.", or does it have to mean "even though he pushed through the weeds..."?
>>
When I tried learning Japanese in my weeb phase a few years back, I used Genki, but coming back to trying to learn Japanese now the expediency of something like Tae Kim seems nice. I'm curious as to how you guys would recommend making effective use of the content in a more concise grammar guide given that there are no/not many exercises to solidify your understanding. It seems like without the exercises and the like all of the material in the guide will just immediately leave your mind.

The whole point of the "/djt/ method" is to read as much as possible. That way you actually better reinforce the grammar points because you're being constantly exposed to them. As opposed to genki where the only reading is the dialogue for each chapter and whatever text accompanies the kanji study. And then successive chapters don't necessarily reinforce prior learned grammar points well enough.

>>The whole point of the "/djt/ method" is to read as much as possible. That way you actually better reinforce the grammar points because you're being constantly exposed to them.
My problem here is just that by the time you get through the grammar guide and start to read you will have probably forgot most of the grammar points anyway.

>And then successive chapters don't necessarily reinforce prior learned grammar points well enough.
From what I remember of Genki from studying it before, the textbook itself is lacking on this, but the workbook tends to do a good job of reviewing previous grammar points.

>My problem here is just that by the time you get through the grammar guide and start to read you will have probably forgot most of the grammar points anyway.
Well, if you aren't sure on a grammar point when reading, you look it up. I think the reason this method is difficult is that it's very frustrating at the beginning, but I'm sure those frustrations will build into learning successes. I can't really say, I took 3 semesters with genki and a conversation course before I dived into reading recently because I knew I was not advancing at the pace I wanted to be. So I already knew most basic grammar.

You're reinforcing his point. Yes, grammar is just going to be some pointless theoretical thing that you forget after a few weeks if your only exposure is through a few sentences in Genki.

Is there an effective way of calculating an estimate to the number of review cards an Anki deck will approach given the number of new cards/day and retention rate?
>>
>>78076590
the former.

if 彼が下草をかきわけたところで、彼女の体を木陰に引きずり込むのは無理だった。, it is OK.

the sentence of previous post is not one for a contrastive conjunction.
>>
>>78086310
Reviews always approach infinity. The curve starts out linear and approaches being logarithmic in the base of the ease of your cards. This is for the minimum number of reviews per day assuming you continue to add the same number of new cards every day and exhaust anki's study queue every single day.
>>
>>78087230
I realize that they will continue rising, I'm more just wondering on how to find a count at which review count will "stabilize", if that makes sense.
>>
>>78087357
They don't stabilize. It looks like they do for a lot of people because they gradually get better at Anki and they stop adding new cards before they hit the minimum possible number of reviews, but the minimum possible number of reviews continues to rise. The actual number of reviews is completely subject to your specific studying habits and abilities and cannot be modeled mathematically or computationally.

As someone who just started learning, is she saying the hamster is small and fluffy?
>>
>>78107943
Yes, もこもこ(と) and ぐにゃっと are adverbs that modify inflected words. ~した allows them to act as adjectives and therefore modify uninflected words like nouns, because the ~た can be inflected to the 連体形.
You also see this with トタル adjectives, as in 堂々と (adverb), 堂々とした (adjective).
>>
>>78108278

Thanks a lot, great explanation. Just to clear things up, can you ever use sound-symbolical words with non-past とする to modify nouns? For example, can you ever take クラっとする or something and modify a noun without inflecting it?
>>
>>78108739
Something like もこもこするハムスター would still be grammatically correct, because the する is still in the 連体形, but it sounds strange. You would have to ask a Japanese person, but I think it would mean something like "hamster that acts puffily" (hamster that するs in a もこもこ manner). When you describe something as being もこもこ, the thing has already assumed the もこもこ state, so the perfective ~た is necessary.

その「・」は、and/orです。

desu I'm pretty bad with vocabulary so I most of the time I'm using Rikaikun on the words I don't know while using what I studied from grammar resources to make sense of everything.

I feel like most of the time I spend on Anki is just to make me use Rikaikun less often. But then, since I spent so little time learning vocabulary or practicing grammar, it's really difficult to make sentences of my own.

In other words, just keep on training until you don't need to rely that often on Rikaikun and other dictionaries. I think the best thing about the Core 2k/6k deck is that you will get a head start enough so you don't need to check all the words on a given text.

Anyway, at least that's roughly how it worked for me when learning English though the years.

I want to make sure I'm using DOJG correctly.
In this sentence I don't know how "nano" is being used.
I assumed "nano" is some kind of particle. Couldn't find it, but could find "na":
>a negative imperative marker used by a male speaker in very informal speech
no (there's four uses, assuming it's this one, seems right given the context):
>sentence final particle used by a female speaker or a child to indicate an explanation or emotive emphasis.

So basically the sentence is something like "No, this is your punishment!" Where "na" and "no" doesn't have a literal translation, but adds more emphasis to what's being said?
>>
What verb ending is this:
頑張ったん
>>
>>78146662
>To express state-of-being, when the 「の」 particle is used to convey this explanatory tone, we need to add 「な」 to distinguish it from the 「の」 particle that simply means "of".

ジムのだ。
>It is of Jim. (It is Jim's.)
ジムなのだ。
It is Jim (with explanatory tone).

I'm completely new to this shit, just finished a semester of Japanese for giggles. Trying to follow the DJT guide, is Core 2k universally agreed upon as the best way to learn vocab? There's like 300 different anki decks that all claim to be the best way to start, including one that uses common words from VN and light novels. Should I try one like V2K? Any help would be appreciated.

Core is a terrible way to learn vocabulary, just like any other Anki deck. It's just useful to quickly cram a few thousand basic words into your head while you're studying a beginners grammar to ease your transition in to reading native content. Core is good because it has sentences and audio, which most of the other decks don't have.

well, today I hit 6k vocab and decided to reduce the new card amount to 0
going to keep reviewing till it drops right down then start up again at 30 new cards/day

the average review time for the past month was
>Average answer time: 5.0s (12.1 cards/minute)

and for the deck life
>Average answer time: 5.6s (10.7 cards/minute)
so it isn't super time consuming but it was getting so fucking mentally draining.

kinda torn, yeah. on the one hand letting reviews drop down is good but on the other hand the mining backlog keeps expanding. it is shy of 2k words not yet reviewed and every new manga series has so many words, hundreds of them that aren't found anywhere in Core10k. I don't get how people claim they can do Core6k then read 'easy slice of life manga' without having to look up many words. that's what I read and they're chockers of uncommon vocab.

2k or 6k or even 10k is nothing, vocab wise. how the fuck do you guys handle the torrent of unknown words while mining?

>>
>>78155886
I've been learning jap for several years but never was consistent. I always stopped after a couple months then continued like 8 months later because of school/work and not having proper motivation.

I just started this routine of 10hrs last week and hope to keep it up until I'm fluent since I have all this free time now. I'd say I'm still at N4 at best although I never took the JLPT before.
>>
>>78155886
>>78155989
Forgot to say somethings in my other post. My daily routine is just doing whatever. I'm doing rosetta stone now (someone bought it for me as a gift) and rushing through that now. I think I can complete all the main lessons by next Thursday (i'm skipping all the repetitive lessons inbetween). I also make do some production such as writing in lang 8. I try to do two journal entries a day. I also translate songs that don't have english translations. It's one of the fun things I do that also help me learn japanese.

After finishing rosetta I plan to continue my anki mining deck i've been putting off forever and other decks as well. I'm gonna listen to podcast and read newspapers too.

So
rry for the long posts. What are your routines like? What's your level?

My story is similar to yours, stopping and starting a few times over the years. Seems like the people who fall into that category get really emboldened and determined after so many resumptions. I just do anki, read light novels, and watch shows with subs. I'm probably somewhere between N3 and N2, approx. 4,000 words in anki.

You will burn out if you don't keep it interesting and keep track of your progress in some more tangible way. Remember to have SOME time off, or could get into a guilt and procrastination cycle that spirals out of control.

I'm working toward JLPT 2 myself, usually do 50~100 words a day in anki, and at least 2 hours of reading/listening and an hour of grammar (my weak point). Not all in one big chunk, I usually do 2~4 pomodoros (30 min chunks) per study session with breaks in between sessions.

Keep in mind that in the end, even going at a turtle's pace CONSISTENTLY is better than doing a hare's sprint and stopping.

Particles are dropped all the time in speech, especially in casual speech / people talking fast or like in this case, muttering to themselves. In general, people tend to be lazy with language so things get omitted and slurred together if it makes it easier.
