Foreign Language speaking has always been seen as desirable and posh here, especially since translators were very well paid when we were WE WUZING around the world.
Oddly enough, Spanish never got much traction here, because we sort of have this idea of it being simple enough to meme through if need be, even though it's not as simple. I guess it's because it sort of sounds like a poor-person's Portuguese to us, since the open vowels are what Portuguese children use until they learn how to speak properly.
Despite that, Portuguese is still generally seen as the most beautiful language and has been nowhere near close of being disregarded in favour of any foreign language at all. We have top-tier literature backing it up, and our literature is very closely intertwined with our language and history, since it's always been very self-glorifying/introspective and not very fiction/narration-heavy.
