Canada is literally a fake country, created when Britain was forced to dump a few hardcore cucks (who formed the vast minority of American loyalists) somewhere after the Revolution. Canada has no real identity (DUDE PINEAPPLE PIZZA LMAO) outside of Quebec (which doesn't even want to be a part of Canada). "But that's not fair, Canada has culture!" you say. Very true. The flannel-clad lumberjack, trapping fur and making syrup is a well-known icon world-wide - a QUEBECOIS icon. The only thing close to iconic culture that (Anglo) "Canada" has are the Mounties, and those guys are just gay cowboy police who had to go settle the west because the "Canadians" were too cuckolded and scared to do it themselves. One of Canada's folk heroes is a cop who took away an American cowboy's guns when he tried to go find gold in the Yukon. Can you honestly think of anything more pathetic than that? Great Britain doesn't give a fuck about Canada. Just because you say "Zed" instead of "Zee" doesn't mean they care about you. And why would they? You threw away your British heritage for A FUCKING LEAF and what do you have to show for it? You're a bargain bin America, basically an oversized Vermont. Canada is blessed that they happen to live next to the single most benevolent and peaceful military superpower in Western History. Nobody else would let a pathetic joke like that exist right on their doorstep. And we don't even have to. With NAFTA and the gradual erosion of anything remotely uniquely "Canadian" you're grandchildren will be begging us for annexation. I just hope that my progeny have the good sense to reject it. I wouldn't want this great country bogged down by something as pathetic as """"""""Canada"""""""".

>What exactly does it mean?
The Monarchy is a symbol above politics. It's a living, breathing representation of Canada's heritage and tradition. It also provides far more stable government
>Like do you have to send tax payers money to the queen or something?
No, dumb myth. Not a single Canadian penny goes to the Queen. She gets tax dollars from the UK though, but that's the result of a deal King George III made with Parliament in which the government gives the Monarchy a set salary, but in return the government gets all the tax revenues from Royal owned land (or something like that), which is FUCK load more than they have to dish out to the Monarchy. So the UK government actually makes a huge profit off the Royal family
>Does she have any power over the country?
She is the Queen of Canada, so yeah she has powers. You have to understand that the Canadian Crown and British Crown are technically different entities. The UK could drop the Monarchy tomorrow and nothing would change here. She is the Commander of our Armed Forces and the head of the government, in which she can dissolve at any time, all bills passed in parliament also need Royal Assent before they become law. The Queen does not live in Canada, so her roles are delegated to the Governor General.

>>77962943
>Can she actually make Canada go to war
Yes Royal prerogative technically allows her to do that. Any declaration of war also has to be approved by the Queen/Governor General so technically she can refuse a PM's request for declaration of war.

It may seem extreme and stupid, but those powers are there as a safeguard in case we ever get a batshit insane government that tries to do something stupid.

Never understood the appeal of the red ensign- other than the heavy use of red. Its kind of a kitchen sink of iconography with a poorly framed flag stowed away in the corner. Too patchwork, no bold lines, no strong character, hard to make out at a distance.
>>
>>77963119
>1850s

Newcomers then.
Which frontiersmen? The fur traders of the Hudson Bay Company which was run from London and held a royal charter that empowered them to set up a monopoly and exert just enough pressure to keep America from absorbing the Canadian west? Lord Selkirks settlement granted by the Crown, often considered the Canadian "pilgrims & Mayflower" which was populated by Scottish highland crofters running from the aftermath of the battle of Colloden? Or maybe the lumberjacks who initially set out after mast timber for the Royal Navy? Was it the Royal Canadian Mounted Police that kept the Canadian west a place where peace, order, and good government flourished rather than a yankee wild west, at least when they weren't serving as a royal military regiment in Britain's wars?
You can not remove the Crown from Canadian history and tradition.

Eastport wasn't given back until 1817. The USNavy still sends a warship there every year for the 4th of July as an apology for abandoning it. The highschool, which served as a British ort still has a canon. My town, St. Andrews, NB still has a defensive block house and 3 canons pointed toward them across the bay. We used to shoot them for special events but after 9/11 they wouldn't let us fire canons at America anymore.

Every single time.
Every single leaf thread.
There's some autist who brings up the red ensign.
Some autist who was born well after the new flag came into commission.
Pick a real battle there, autist boy.
What a faggot.

Yeah, we all feel this way. Regionalism is a big thing in Canada. Every /can/ thread I have ever seen over the years inevitably descends into regional banter. Confederacy was a mistake.

An American asked about it and got some answers. Also, everyone seems okay with the maple leaf. The worst comment is someone saying they are fine with the maple lead but prefer the red ensign.

I had been in a montreal hotel and all the maids were old ugly and fat haitian women. Montreal with its chinks and arabs was still 1000x whiter than my hometown Toronto.

How did Harper do that? Are you a Maritimer? Harper fucking hated Maritimers
>>
>>77963757
You're even worse than Mr. Red Ensign. First of all, there's no cultural group called "British" - its rather English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh. And second, you have no personal connection to the British Isles. Its like wearing a harvard alumni shirt because that's where your mom went, even though you went to University of Iqaluit.

And third, you show weakness. Canada may be a cultural dearth currently but thats all the more reason to try to actively shape it into something in your own image. Abandoning it while living here and feigning a connection to somewhere halfway across the world? Come on guy.

bill c24, the one about being able to revoke citizenship from terrorists

it classed me officially as a second class Canadian citizen, because British citizenship is a birthright I have.

And I have family members in England, France and the Netherlands. But you don't see me dressing up like Zwarte Piet and downing jars of raw herring because that's not my culture, regardless of whether I'd want it to be. If you've lived here forever, then you're a Canadian and you have to learn to accept that.

terrorism is a loose definition that is ripe for government abuse. Harper considered protesting to be terrorism.(bill c51)

no I'm not a terrorist, but that doesn't mean I want to be called a fucking second class citizen by my own government either. How is that supposed to instill pride in this country? fuck canada.

it doesn't matter anyways, Trudeau got rid of it about a month ago. It was a campaign promise and It's why I voted for him.

>>77964048
You won't see me downing Irn Bru and haggis while playing the bagpipes and wearing a kilt either though, that's dumb. I'm still a Scottish-Canadian whether you like it or not.

you won't see me being a walking caricature of a Canadian either. Alright that's a lie, I rock the lumberjack look as much as possible

>>
>>77962988

This is not correct.

Since the Royal Assent Act of 2002, the entire Royal Assent process is a purely ceremonial step in all things from law to war.

The moment a bill or declaration of war is signed by the 3rd round in the house, it is immediately in affect and goes off for ceremonial royal assent.

The Queen does not control our laws, in fact she doesn't control any commonwealth nation anymore, we were the last to change to this system of ceremonial assent.
