If yurop can use a skinny mountain range to seperate eurasia then we can use a skinny manmade canal
North America and South America occupy different tectonic plates, and even though the two look connected on maps, the 'path' between the two through Central America is actually basically impassable due to the Darién Gap.
If we're talking about traveling over land, then North Ameirca is about as isolated from South America as Europe is from Asia. Traveling by sea is the only way to move between the two effectively.
