Because we're one of the most densely populated countries on earth most foreigners think Dutch people live in some giant suburb.

But reality is the majority of Dutch people live in small villages. And when you bike outside of one village you can probably already see the next one in the distance. And you have to pass some grass fields with cows, canals and windmills to reach it.

Dutch culture is very risk avoidant. So it's very much encouraged to save money just in case. Because you never know when you need it.

People call their secret money stash "an apple for the thirst". The average person has a buffer of 33k dollars. By comparison, in the USA it's something like 4,5k.
