Define "poverty". I've seen people lacking material wealth who are very happy with their lives, just as I've seen exceptionally wealthy people who are very miserable and some even committed suicide. Material wealth means nothing when you're a spiritually miserable person.

And I'd be considerably more comfortable living near Peru than I would living near Venezuela, that I can assure you with absolute certainty, regardless of which is considered to be "poorer".

While it's true that material wealth =/= happines, it's far more common to find more wealthy people satisfied with life than poor people live thinking the same. African countries tend to score really low on happiness and perceived satisfaction with life indexes for a reason

If they are happy with the way they live then anyone would agree that to the indigenous Congolese they're the happiest with their tribes, not in a heavily urbanized said 1st world country away from their family and traditions.

And if you're about to kill yourself, I don't think living in a country with very high HDI will make you any less miserable.

Maybe that's because they're lacking something else other than material wealth? By our modern standards, most of our ancestors would be deemed miserable and suicidal, when the average westerner today lives better than kings did in the Middle Ages. By your conclusion, there should be no depression or sad people across the western world either.

I mean, just look at those poor indigenous Mongolians, how miserable and depressed they must be farming the land, in tight-knight community, with strong family values and preserving their ancient traditions to this day. So much pain, after all they clearly have no money to afford the latest iPhone and upload fancy yacht photos to their Instagram account for likes and views.
