Sieges are a perfect place for diseases and famine. There is this anecdote of a belgian city under spanish siege. After several months the citizens surrendered and ran towards the spanish camp in despair because of the hunger the suffered. When they arrived spaniards were in an even worse condiction.

Lots of French Protestants went to Prussia and founded influential families in politics and the military. Bismarck called them "the best Germans" due to their loyalty and in 1871 because there were so many German officers of Huguenot descent some said the Geman victory was the late Huguenot revenge against France.
