It comes from the dynastic union of Isabel the Catholic and Ferdinand of Aragon. As a courtly play on words, the y in yugo (yoke) stood for Ysabel (period spelling) and the f in flechas (arrows) stood for Fernando. The rope represent the gordian knot and the motto "tanto monta" is short for "tanto monta cortar como desatar" ("cutting and untying amount to the same"), a reference to Alexander the Great which was adopted by Ferdinand of Aragon as his personal motto.
