Oddly enough the Newfoundland dog is from Labrador and the labrador retriever is from Newfoundland.

The former is known as a gentle giant and was traditionally kept on ships because they are built for swimming and acted as lifeguards. Nana, the nursery dog from Peter Pan was a Newfoundland.
The lab is the most popular dog in the world.

I used to know an old woman from our block, who had a scooby-doo tier argentinian dog. He was huge, but never scared me, though I have some prejudice towards big animals.
