Arabic is ridiculous because the standard language is based on a 500 year old dialect (incidentally, the dialect the Quran was written in). This is a horrible idea as history already has proven (e.g. the Greek language question).

The language people speak on a day to day basic in the Arabic world is as different from standard Arabic as Spanish is different to classical Latin.

I've talked to plenty of Arabs about this. Yes, I imagine it would be possible for them to communicate, but neither of them would actually speak standard arabic. they'd most likely use a compromise between some common dialect that everyone is familiar with (e.g. Egyptian) and maybe some standard arabic. they might even use English. speaking English is easier than speaking standard Arabic anyway.

not that hard to learn, even if you aren't familiar with Semitic languages. it is magnitudes easier than Mandarin for example. the only hard part for a westerner is pronouncing some of the shitty ancient consonants like ح ط ص ق ظ ض ع. modern hebrew, for example, gave up on many of those consonants since they are hard and sound ugly. they are literally worse than some african consonants where you have to whistle or something.
