Contrary to Euro belief, we do actually have a taxpayer-supported system here - Medicaid (for poor people) and Medicare (for the elderly or infirm). Together these cover (or at least subsidize) about 40% of the population.

The take-away: covering 40% of the population is already more expensive per capita than covering 100% of the population in any other developed country. That's how insane American health care prices are.

It's a combination of factors. Medical malpractice suits were once very common here, making expensive malpractice insurance for providers a must. Pharmaceutical companies enjoy strong IP protections that let them essentially price-gouge for years without worrying about competition. The interconnected nature of health care networks and insurance companies makes processing claims quick and relatively painless, so most Americans don't bother to shop around for health care at lower prices like they would in a normal market system.

None of these are particularly easy to fix (otherwise they would have been already) and for right now, the system is functioning mostly fine. It'll probably face a massive breakdown soon though, which is when the government will be forced to step in and do something. Nothing ever gets done until shit is absolutely dire. It's the American way, after all.

Their demand is driving the costs up considerably, and they also all generally have some sort of comprehensive "get whatever you want done" coverage either from their retirement packages or from voting it in for themselves through the government.
