finns are not scandis, but our movies and series tend to be very melancholic too. finns want to watch something that they can relate to

Think it's a reaction to american shows t b h, they just seems way too bright, constructed and fake so scandinavian shows try to be more realistic. I guess they become dark and grim because working in police and dealing with crime on a daily basis actually is pretty depressing stuff, who would have thought.

I don't think our shows are like that. Oftentimes the themes are rather dark.

Very rarely, most US shows we have on TV are almost cartoony in their treatment of police work.
Bulgarian shows on the other hand try to be as edgy as they can, even if they are simplistic.
Comedies on the other hand are similar in everything except the cliches and themes in use.

Because it sold like crazy both domestically and internationally when one guy did it so every other writer jumped on this bandwagon. Wish the meme would end as it only serves as a self fulfilling prophecy. A barber told me he was once asked how we northerners dealt with dark winters and he responded something like "because they're preceded by a northern summer".
