You are because Russia on average gets attacked on or from the Great European Plain once every 33 years and Russias heartland is on the Great European Plain. Russia needs to expand West towards the Carpathians and Poland, the entire expansionist agenda of the USSR was exactly this, expand west, protect Moscow or risk perishing.

In reality, Poland much like many European nations only exists to serve as a buffer state between the big 3, most notably Russia and Germany. Unfortunately who ever has influence over it basically controls the doorstep to the other, ideally splitting it in half would minimize problems. Hence why Germany and Russia partitioned Poland by halves in ww2, that option makes Germany and Russia most comfortable and gives not just one but both some wiggle room.

Wars, especially European wars usually start due to fear of the neighbors, or revenge for losing the last war(s) that was started over fear of the neighbors.
Unless there is something pact or agreement wise to stop all European infighting, European wars will always keep happening, it's just simply the geography.

France has always feared Germany, in fact, a united Germanic peoples is often referred to as the worst thing to happen to France. Before Germany, it was just you fighting the British, but thankfully, there was a channel being used as a buffer. But then Germany appeared as a united nation and all of a sudden France had an enemy to the east that was larger in size, had a larger population and was capable of using the Great European Plain to attack France from the North East, nearest its capital.

It's not a fear as is the French fear Germans as in the people, it's meant as in the country is fearful of what the other country is capable of.
