Spanish is so much more confusing to me as compared to when I was learning Chinese and English. Why does "Que" have several meanings like 'that', 'who', 'which', 'than', 'if' and 'or'?

I'm a neophyte also, but from what I can tell generally speaking:
qué == what
que (not accent mark) == that
cuál == that, but also "which"

So "que tengas buenos días" is "that you have a good morning" or "have a good morning",

But this gets confusing to me when you end up with "cuál es su nombre?" is "what is your name?" emphatically. Qué is used when you have a noun immediately following "Qué casa" (that house). Cuál is used when you have a verb or preposition: Cuál es su nombre?"

Then:
quien == who
if == si (no accent, if you add an accent then it is "yes")
or == o

"Yes, if we can buy it" == Sí, si podemos comprarlo.

"Do you guys want to drink or eat?" == Quieren tomar or comer?

To add to that. I hear someone say "I took three years of German in school and can barely speak it" but they had class for an hour five times per week for 32 weeks and studied maybe three hours per week. That's only 256 hours and not very condensed so low efficiency.

If you took someone studying an hour and a half per day, by the end of one year they'd be at almost 600 hours which is the rule of thumb of getting reasonably good at a level 1 language according to FSI.

I'm pretty motivated but I'm an unironic diagnosed autist so I tend to really jump into things I get interested in. I'm spending like 3 hours a day on top of work studying.

Procrastination is generally just not wanting it bad enough. I mean I got thin and people asked me "how do you avoid eating that?!" and the truth is I just wanted to be a thin more than I wanted a fucking brownie.

Fair enough it was just easier to know how to progress when I was lower level.
It's a lot different when you are A1 and you're having a blast just doing memrise or something and constantly discovering new rules.
But at my level the only way to really progress is to just sit down and read and like I said to my surprise I haven't discovered how to enjoy it yet.

Textbooks are a good resource to have but they can also burn you out with their tedium.

Like for instance it isn't really necessary to procedurally read through every possible variation of rules that determine whether a French noun might be masculine or feminine and in fact is probably detrimental to your overall interest in the language to do so.

I think it's better to learn through content and after a while all those tedious rules become more intuitive.

Each jump is significantly harder than the last. A1 to A2 is easier than A2 to B1 and so forth. Think about vocab. First you learn say 1000 words and can do pretty good, but if you want to really understand most people you have to get to at least 5000 where you can get most of the rest from context, but when you start reading more complex texts then you need an even bigger vocab and those words are less and less common so harder and harder to learn. You see them less, so they take longer to commit to memory. Same thing goes from more complex speech patterns and grammar exceptions. So just keep sticking with it and read more and more.

Que/qué = what

Example: ¿Qué quieres? = What do tou want?

Esto es lo que estoy buscando = This is what I am looking for

¡Qué casa! = What a house!
(It's accentuated when it is in a question or exclamation)

Que = than
Soy más rápido que tú = I'm faster than you

Quiero más que eso = I want more than that


Que = that

Quiero que vayas = I want you to go

(literally: I want that you go)
(In this case it's used because of the subjunctive)

Those are its meanings, but it has more translations because structures differ from English.
For example:
¿Cuál es tu nombre? = What is your name? (but literally, it is: which is your name?)

And, no, que doesn't translate as or nor if.

Baudelaire is pretty much the standard in that regard, and if you were able to read L'Étranger with some ease, then it shouldn't be too difficult at all. His most famous work is "Les fleurs du mal" (that very title is actually a nice summary of his entire style).

As for plays, I would recommend starting with plays by Victor Hugo (and, of course, his novels as well are must reads), for example "Cromwell".

I've been to France twice over this year and I haven't really enjoyed it compared to visiting Germany. Country doesn't seem to agree with me on a cultural level i.e. unclean, poor manners etc. So i feel like that's a good reason to switch.

to give you an idea about its impossibleness, choose a random pinyin like "xi". xi has 4 tones, take the first tone for example (pic related). these xis are pronounced exactly the same, however they all have different meanings and Hanzis, and this is only one tone. imagine the endless Hanzis, tones and meanings you have to memorize using some stupid mnemonic story

Mari has it but it's fairly easy. There's only three different "cases" of vowel harmony: -e (default), -o and -ö. So for example, you say jal+äštE for "in the village", but pört+äštÖ for "in the house" (because of the ö in pört).

I don't know enough about Hungarian to say, but based on my little knowledge of Finnish and Estonian grammar, the grammar is actually quite similar in many regards. In fact, Finnish and Mari even share the same genitive inflection. Of course, there are also some big differences in grammar, but the similarities are still quite interesting in my opinion. The really big differences are the phonetics and the vocabulary itself.

Tips from someone who got to about a lower middle level in Japanese in around 4 months using the AJATT method (My method varied a bit)

I'm seeing a lot of "Hur dur it's too hard hur dur".

Remember; Language isn't hard, it just takes time to get used to. With a lot of listening, reading and over all exposure to the language, you WILL eventually become able to understand the said language.

Make sure you get away from your beginner books as well and read NATIVE material. For instance: Wanna learn Finnish?

Great! Make sure you do everything in Finnish once you get a basis down.

Do as much listening in Finnish as possible. Read Finnish EVERYDAY as much as you can. Isolated grammar study is good in the beginning but towards the middle, start to edge away from grammar study and focus more on native material. In return, you'll learn grammar through sentence mining and such.

DO EVERYTHING IN YOUR TARGET LANGUAGE!!!!! I cannot stress this enough. AND LISTEN AT EVERY MOMENT YOU CAN!!!!! READ LISTEN ALL THE TIME.

I can honestly say, in 4 months i could read a Japanese article about Pico-8 (I'll link) To about 70-80%.

I'm currently making the transition in using a monolingual dictionary for Japanese. So instead of learning the same English word for a German word, you just use the German definition to define the word you want to learn. This can be used for all languages.

There are only two irregular verbs in the entire language. As for nouns/pronouns and their inflections, there are some exceptions, but very few. Not only that, but the few exceptions that do exist are almost only for Russian loanwords, and are far from dramatic, for example the word кaфe ("kafe"), instead of being declined as "kafəšte" as would normally be the case, it's "kafešte" (that example is the inessive case, but the same goes for other inflections as well). So, literally only a single vowel in difference.

Yep, definitely. I'm very naive. One time in the city an old gypsy man came up to me and asked to borrow my phone, cause he needed to make a call to his wife. I gave it to him, he made the call, thanked me. Sometimes online I say pretty racist things, but in real life I tend to be downright angelic. If somebody asks, I'll always try to help, even if they're gypsies/whatever.

What I mean by that is that the Department of Finno-Ugric Studies at the University of Vienna has fully dedicated itself to the case of the Mari language over the past 10 years. They've created a 700-page textbook (in English), an extensive online dictionary (in both English and Russian), a morphological analyzer which is even more useful than a normal translation tool like Google Translate, and even more (all of it aimed specifically at autodidacts). Even by normal language-teaching standards, the amount of work they've put in is really amazing.

I've been learning Portuguese for the past three years and I feel confident with my knowledge. I m like a B2.

I want to learn Esperanto next, but I am not sure how to go about it, since there seems not to be too many textbooks available.

Anyone have any experience learning Esperanto? Where can I practice online with others?

On listen and repeat type exercises, in this case Pimsleur, if I'm able to answer the question but only by stopping the "tape" momentarily (seconds, not a whole bunch of time) because it's a bit too fast, should I still continue with lessons or keep continuing that one?

Seems like my response times will go down and getting stuck ends up making me more memorize lines than it does make progress.

Yeah it's weird how many females are involved. Some years, the main university in Mari El also has a "summer school" for foreigners to come, have intensive language classes, learn about the culture and do trips to villages and such. Personally after several days of intensive vocabulary learning I like taking a day or two "off" from learning new vocab so I can instead properly review what I learned in the previous days, but at the end of the day you should take into account your own learning preferences first and foremost.

I'm so confused with my current Spanish lesson. Here are some sentences from it:


We're not leaving together = No nos vamos todos juntos
Let's all go eat = Vamos todos a comer

Why is "nos" gone?

We are all leaving = Todos nos vamos
We are all leaving the hotel = Nos vamos todos del hotel

Why did todos move from the beginning of "nos vamos" to after as soon as "del hotel" was added?

The verb "ir" simply means "to go", whereas "irse" (reflexive, hence the "nos") implies some notion of "leaving" or "going away".

On this I'm not 100% sure, but I'm fairly certain that it would be correct either way, it's simply a matter of style (i.e. what's most common/natural) and what element you want to put emphasis on (as is often the case when dealing with word order in Spanish).

No, it's just that taking a normal verb and making it reflexive can actually change its meaning (generally in a way that's actually related), in other words it's more than just adding object pronouns. And "to go" and "to leave" are not really opposites, they're fairly close in meaning actually.

I think it is the best West Slavic language one can learn. Polish has the most speakers,but the phonetics of it are crazy(sibilants are everywhere) and the grammar is hell even by Slavic standards. Czech is like Slovak but with more irregular grammar and crazy ř phoneme. I understand it perfectly yet cannot pronounce ř if my life depended on it. South and East Slavs are often surprised by how relatively easy to understand Slovak is for them, as most of them believe West Slavic languages are completely alien due to hearing Czech and especially Polish (intelligibility of Slovak for Croats with zero Slovak exposure is 25 percent, to compare, intelligibility of Polish with Croatian is 5 (!) percent).

Try your local library as well. In mine, they have a (limited) selection of various German books for kids as well as adults. It's harder to search since you don't know the titles but if you're able to ask a librarian they can show you how to find them.

There's also the added benefit that Greenlandic has much more vitality as a language (seeing as it's the predominant language of a quasi-country), whereas Inuktitut plays little to no administrative role in Northern Canada. Also, Greenlandic only uses the Latin alphabet, whereas Inuktitut uses their own syllabics.
