unfortunately not

If anybody would like to contribute towards making such a chart, even if it's only a little, please do so. You don't even have to make it aesthetic, worst case scenario someone else will take care of doing that.

Pic related is my contribution for Spanish. As you can see, it's not much, but obiously if enough people contribute then we'll have some solid charts.
>>
>>77577256
I'm not intermediate so I don't think I'm qualified to make one.
>>
>>77577631
Are you sure? Even if it's only for getting to A2, it's better than nothing. Also we're always tempted to think "I can't contribute, since I'm not advanced enough yet, it would be hypocritical", but if we all think that way we'll never get anything done. I myself am only B2 in Spanish (barely), so I'm still far from being fluent or even confident in myself, however my experience for reaching my present level could still possibly be valuable to others.

Currently learning Spanish, i took two intensive semesters of it in my senior year in college, just graduated 2 months ago.

I'm intent on becoming fluent, so I'm just going to move to Guadalajara, Mexico in 3 weeks to teach english. Really pumped i got the job! But i know i have a lot of work to do in regards to learning Spanish.

How long do you think it will be till I'm fluent? I would say I'm slightly above intermediate at this moment. Has anyone else moved over to another country to learn a different language.

This is literally a shock course!

Passable French should be all you need language-wise.

The only dangerous parts are outside the airport, the major Dakar market, and the nightclub district in Dakar. The more rural you are, the safer you are and the nicer everyone is.
Go to Saint-Louis and Fatik. If you're feeling adventurous, go to Ziguinchor and maybe Kedougou.
Bargain for everything. Never take the first offer, unless it's already really low and you're someplace super rural, because the villages are the only places people will be straight with you on prices, outside of tourist establishments.

the g sound is written nk because gamma is now ghamma which is between g and h
>>
>>77582510
They are several schools of thought on this.

Some people will say that you should do it straight away, starting from the moment you can string your first sentences together.

The issue is that it puts a big burden on your partner if there is a big gap in proficiency between you two.

If you find someone who is ok with this as long as he gets to practice their skills for the same amount of time then it's alright.

Others will say that some intermediate stage is better, though you might procrastinate and keep putting it off by justifying it with your lack of proficiency. Yes, at some point you have to string your first robot-like sentences together to try to communicate with another person and get to practice.

On apps like HelloTalk or Tandem you can just start talking to people. I, personally, talked to several dozens of people. Many just one or two times. Others more regular to a few I talk to virtually every week. You don't really have to make a great commitment to a fixed exchange if that's not what you are into.

It's hard to find committed and reliable anyway. So consider talking to many people.
>>
>>77582805
I'm beginning to recognise your posting style, you seem very knowledgeable on the process of language learning. I feel like I should be taking notes.

I personally believe that burdening someone to basically become my private tutor is both selfish and rude and will eventually lead to nowhere, so I do want to reach a level of proficiency in which I can at least talk about casual things before I search for a partner.

I'm personally considering hiring a tutor or attending classes to accelerate my learning a bit, albeit I'm not sure exactly how much this would help. I generally do prefer self-study, but talking with someone who knows the language inside out, or finding other people as enthused to learn as I am seems like it could both contribute to my drive and morale immensely.
>>

>I personally believe that burdening someone to basically become my private tutor is both selfish and rude and will eventually lead to nowhere, so I do want to reach a level of proficiency in which I can at least talk about casual things before I search for a partner.

Well, like I said. Some people are ok with that as long as you switch to the other language for the same amount of time or look for people on your level. On the other end of the spectrum there are some very selfish people out there. Never be to afraid to insist on your turn.

There are also other ways. Like you mentioned, private tutors in real life but you can also go to Italki and pay a professional/semi-professional person to tutor you over the Internet.

>I do want to reach a level of proficiency in which I can at least talk about casual things before I search for a partner.

In the very beginning you should establish some kind of 'routine'. What I mean is that you should look up the specific vocabulary that relates to your own person and how to present yourself and talk about yourself and your life a bit.

It's hard to start a conversation from scratch and it's easier if you have managed to nail that initial part down, it makes expanding conversations to other topics easier.

>Write sentences. Never lists of words.
I've been doing vocab wrong. Even Lingvist I often just think of the word rather than take the sentence into much account, despite that I try to.

I tried to remember sentences but that proved to be painfully slow and wasn't making much progress.

there was a congolombiANO who I personally conversed with in /fr/ a few years ago who was able to speak and write in excellent French (especially his speaking), good enough that he was actually able to immigrate to Québec (for which knowledge of French is an important criteria). Anyone else trying to learning Czech?

I seem to find myself having quite little time every day after work so I'd like to squeeze as much as I can from those couple-few hours that I have. Are there any general rules of thumb in language learning about what ratio should be of learning vocabulary versus grammar? Or which grammar part to start with first, adding others later (verbs, conjugations, cases etc). I know you're supposed to learn pretty much everything at the same time but it seems so overwhelming and I end up not learning much at all.
>>
>>77590039
don't learn grammar that much, you will never be able to speak czech perfectly, shits impossible, the grammar is too insane. I knew a latino guy exchange student there and he said the same thing. Just practice vocabulary and correct pronounciation, that's the way to go. Everyone is going to understand you even if you mess up some grammar. I'm Czech so I know this
>>
>>77590127
It doesn't seem too hard for me, just needs a lot of repetition. I know it because I know some colloquial Russian, grew up hearing the language at home every day and I find Czech quite similar. Only thing is that I am not sure what to grab for learning first and what next. I already ~50% learned verb conjugations which I practice with different verbs.

I'll probably have hundreds this next year, but nothing specific immediately.

On a general language learning level: It seems like most people learn ahead on vocab than what they can speak. Like right now I have maybe 600-700 words I know in Spanish, but I can hardly put them together. Does it "click" later as I do more reading and speaking? Those words will start to be able to string together easier?
>>
>>77607616
>Like right now I have maybe 600-700 words I know in Spanish, but I can hardly put them together. Does it "click" later as I do more reading and speaking?
this is why, once you have a little bit of vocab and basic grammar notions under your belt, it's desirable to learn sentences rather than mere words

No, they are just tools on a journey. You need to read, and speak, and practice. Most seem to agree that a combination of tools is required. You'd probably want to add something like a Michel Thomas for listening and guidence, Lingvist or Clozemaster for contextual learning, some kind of grammar resource (a textbook or workbook), and reading/listening/speaking.

you realize how to use the vocabulary you know correctly when you start reading more complex texts, like articles, poetry, journals, etc. You could practice taking a excerp of an article and translating it, and then asking a native is you have any mistakes.
tomar = to take / to grab / to drink (this word has these two basic meanings)

beber = to drink (it doesn't have any another meaning)

Polish <rz> is the same as <ż> i.e. [ʐ], which is like [ʒ] except the tip of the tongue is angled upward. For Czech <ř> you can try starting off with a [r] then quickly switching to a [ʐ] or [ʂ] after the first couple of taps. Apparently once you do that often enough in fast speech it falls together into the proper [r̝] by itself
>>
>>77611669
You can say both, but it's a regional thing. For example, here we use "tomar" instead os "beber" (in casual speech). So, if you say "beber" here I'd certainly know that you are a foreigner, and it's the other way around in other places.

Japanese actually has a lot of Linguistic resources as well as really good literature. that is why i picked it. Never was into Anime.

Korean has good things as well, if you like PC games and such Korean is a fine choice. There is no right or wrong language to learn. Just be passionate and immerse as much as possible.

I've been learning German on my own for 7 years now, and I'm taking university classes this year before making a trip to Germany and Austria.

Since I'm comfortable enough with German, I was thinking of learning either continental Spanish and Portuguese. My native language is French and I took a lot of Spanish classes during my high school and college years, but I forgot most of it. Portuguese intrigues me because half of my family lives in the Azores, and I love listening to fado. I'm also thinking of travelling to Uruguay in the future, even though I'm leaning more towards Portuguese. What should I do, anons?

They're very different in that speakers treat you massively different. French love when people, especially women, learn French and will help you IF you can get the pronunciation correct. Or they'll focus on the pronunciation and accent.

Germans are odd people but plenty of them are somewhat uneasy with other people learning their language, they can sometimes be downright hostile; especially if you can speak it decently.

German is seriously underrated and a neat language with much better literature and philosophy than French. French is easier to learn though because of how speakers treat learners

don't get too caught up in the "language learning" meme. I mean learning languages as an identity or hobby in and of itself. Get interested in a particular language and stick with it. Being half-assed in a dozen languages means nothing compared to being fluent in two

Don't overthink it
>>
>>77621824
Apart from some learning resources that I came across, I have listened to some Welsh songs. Most of them teach Southern Welsh through, I like Northern Welsh more, it has /ɨ/ and North Wales is Welsh stronghold.

Anyway, you should get used to the phonology and the orthography first. Welsh grammar (from what I have know n) is not extremely hard, and it's easier to pick words out when listening than French, for example.

Why is it that in Russian the palatalized Л sometimes sounds so similar to its unpalatalized counterpart?

For example:
>Лéнин : https://forvo.com/word/%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%BD/#ru
>Aлéхин : https://forvo.com/word/%D0%B0%D0%BB%D0%B5%D1%85%D0%B8%D0%BD/#ru

In the second example, the palatalization of Л is very clear. However, in the first example, I'm struggling to hear it. If I didn't know any better, I would simply have said that the speaker wasn't doing any palatalization of that letter.

Anybody have any explanation on that? Do I simply need to train my ears to better hear those small nuances, or is there something else going on?
>>
>>77626145
also, for the Лeнин link, make sure to scroll down to the bottom of the page for the Russian instead of the Tatar
>>
>>77626112
Norwegian I can speak quite well, I don't read it very often though. I have been reading "Skabelsen, Mennesket og Messias" by Henrik Wergeland on and off for a couple years now. It's almost Danish though and I sometimes need a Danish dictionary. It's a pretty interesting piece and I've never read anything quite like it. German I read or try to read more of, and have an ok level at that; but I can't really speak it because I've only used it a handful of times and have never stayed in Germany. I mean I have good pronunciation and a good grasp of grammar, but being able to quickly form sentences off the top of your head and communicate it is a whole other area of expertise that requires regular usage.

Just steady, regular habit. Don't overwork yourself and look more towards doing a little bit regularly and having done some of it every day. Also approach from multiple angles, textbook, flashcards, audio-programs, classes, conversational partners, reading, etc. Never get fixated on a particular aspect of it and try to push on as evenly as possible
>>
>>77626273
are you interested in finding a german language partner? it seems like if anything you just got a small gap in your ability that would be easy and fun to fill

ooh haha the multiple angles I've trouble with
I am shit at keeping up with textbooks (though I actually ordered one online)
flashcards I am so lazy to use anki and make cards, I can't afford classes

I wish I could be like one of those people that just apparently learn english from tv shows and shit
>>
>>77625255
They dind't have a written form of their language, and all "their words" we have today are assumptions made from the comparison of different words from different languages that have some kind of connection. So, no, it's impossible.
>>
>>77626349
I had one a couple of years back that sort of blew me off and never quite have managed to get a new one.

The multiple angles bit is an issue all autodidacts run into. A class is structured in such a way as to bring up grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and basic conversational skills at a fairly even and steady pace; meaning that you're not overloading yourself in any particular (by cramming like 100 infinitive forms of a verb at once for example) direction.

English in the modern world is a really different situation. Foreigners can still basically immerse themselves in our popular culture. Imagine if everyone you knew had varying levels of a hard-ons for Russian. They listened to Russian music, watched Russian TV, listened to Russian music, used Russian slang, and regularly spoke in Russian, and almost all their time online was spent writing in Russian. The schools taught it early on a very important developmental period. Even the most anti-Russian or less educated person you knew spoke some Russian. For us immersion in another language can't reach that level, except by going to that country.
>>
>>77626456
I think you should find a new german pal!

well in a way I am lucky because the case with russian is they sort of have their own internet "bubble" so to speak
it's like a different world with their own social medias and whatnot

I think I will also go through memrise word frequency list, study grammar on the side and then maybe I'll have a good enough base to do some immersion

my own suggestion is to consider limiting computer and internet based reading and education where possible. I, myself, get quite distracted and am in more of a defocused state of mind when I use my computer and find physical flashcards and textbooks a bit better. But that's just me, you should also look into how and where you learn best

good luck

My mouth is literally incapable of producing this sequence of syllables. I simply cannot say this word aloud. It's driving me insane.

Do you Russians have two fucking tongues or something? I'm still struggling just rolling my Rs let alone following a rolled R with "avstv".
>>
So I learned polish for about a year and after a full year i could barely undrstand intermediate text.

Then I tried mandarin, wasted about 100 hours on it and decided to fug out of it.

Then I learned a russian for half year and it was super easy compared to these two above and after 6 month I can easily read graded reading book amd understand it all. But constructin sentences is still pain in the ass. (Because i didn't touch grammar a single time).

Tip for rolled R !

Do you remember when you were kid and didn't know how to whistle?

It is the same with rolled R. You are trying to roll rongue too slow and weak. Try to roll it as fast and with as much force as you can and you will succeed.

2nd tip. Try to say long a. Like aaaaaaa. You see how your throat vibrate? Now say B! English R comes from the throat, it vibrates and rolled R come straight from the mouth like B there is no vibrating throat.

I'm a Spanish learner and find it interesting how you did Pimsleur. I feel like moving at the recommended pace for Pimsleur isn't ideal because it doesn't give enough supporting vocab or time for you to internalize the material.
>>
>>77637387
My main problem with pimsleur is how casual it is with grammar. The lack of vocab is just a side-effect of the form of material (sentences only, effectively).
>>
>>77637608
I've been tinkering with Michel Thomas on the side too. I haven't really found the balance yet, but I feel like doing a bit of Michel Thomas Spanish concurrently with Pimsleur Spanish might be a good combination.

Making cards is part of studying for me. I actually do a mixture of physical notecards and quizlet. As far as remembering to use it, that's essential but you need to just establish a routine. Pick a time every day where you do your cards.

So sometimes I go to foreign wikipedia and click random articles to see if I can read them.

I noticed some weird patterns I can't tell if wikipedia is trolling me or not.

If you click random article in German there's a high chance that the page will be some random unknown athlete who played 2 years of varsity in the 1970s, usually in soccer or ice hockey.

If you click random article in Dutch it will almost always be a one sentence article about a type of root or plant.

If you click random article in French it will be a 3 sentence article about a small town or province in some country or some kind of government/bureaucratic region.

If you click random article in Russian it will be a 20,000 word article about a bus model or some kind of industrial thing.

Am I getting memed? What is going on with this?
>>
>>77626145

http://vocaroo.com/i/s0RYD6CLx9iD
>>
>>77656074
Bit of an afterthought, but since the sequence "лэ" doesn't (I think) occur in native Russian words, here it is at a common word boundary:

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1VHyRl2EIQa

Cдeлaл этo
"Did this."

Hopefully this helps.
>>
>>77656074
>>77657259
Thanks, I think I understand better, right now I can't vocaroo but later if I can I'll try to do those myself, to see if I really have understood or not.

Just as a follow-up question: you said you couldn't hear the difference between the Aлeхин example and the Лeнин example, does that mean that the degree to which that consonant is palatalized is fairly variable/flexible? Because to me the л in Aлeхин is very clearly palatalized, but in Лeнин it's more "reserved" than in Aлeхин.
