The Muhammad one is the one that gets the most resistance as it's claimed the Qur'an has never changed, when the earliest manuscripts of the Qur'an are indeed different. Including the fact Muhammad himself embellished his own life, the Sahaba (followers of Muhammad) are said to have memorised his revelation verbatim for 70 years before a word of it was put to paper.

Muhammad is composite character because his own recounting of his life is filled with fable, and the oral tradition of the Sahaba who codified the Qur'an is imperfect and the was plenty of time for stories to diverge (which they did).

Some Islamic Scholars also claim during the first Caliphate (the Rashidun) much of Muhammad's character was invented based on hearsay in the form of Hadith, particularly during the reign of Caliph Muwawiya. So what we have today is a larger than life heroic Muhammad who bears limited resemblance to the person who actually existed.
